Print-a-Palooza- Monday October 1st

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-up September 28
Better late than never. We are away and didn't get the internet password until this morning, so I am a little behind in getting my weekly wrap-up post written and published. :-)
In my life/homeschool this week: Another busy and fun week. On Monday, the kiddos had their music lessons and Kiddo #4 had her IEW writing class. On Tuesday, we visited "Howell Living History Farm" for a wonderful presentation on wheat harvesting/planting/threshing/griding, etc., etc. :-))) Much hands-on fun to be had. I posted lots of pics here.
On Wednesday, after Kiddo #1 and 2's online class, we headed to my uncle's house in NJ to help get rid of some of the extra wood on his property. Recently a large tree fell on their house and another on my aunt's car totaling it. (thank goodness they were not in the car at the time), so they decided to take down about 12 trees that were looking pretty ominous around their property. My father-in-law, who uses a wood-burning stove said he could certainly use some of it, so we were helping two people out at the same time. While the kids and the hubby loaded and helped make the runs, I got to spend some time hanging out and chatting with my aunt and uncle. :-)
On Thursday, we headed down here to Bethany Beach, DE. It is quite beautiful and certainly peaceful this time of year. We stay on a military base that is right in the heart of everything and has great recreational accomodations. We couldn't be more pleased.
Friday, while the dh and Kiddo #1 headed up to Dover for a NASCAR event, Kiddos 2,3,4 and I headed to the private beach here on post. They had a lot of fun playing in the sand and just enjoying the water. I think that a miniature golf game just may be in the cards for later on. :-)
What I'm praying for: The list continues to grow. So many people know or love those who are sick or suffering, out of work and have asked for prayers. I also pray for our military and our nation.
P.S.- for anyone who may be interested, I wrote two posts earlier this week offering free printables. One post has art projects such as verse banks, a Last Supper Craft and window painting. That can be found here. The other post has a compound words worksheet along with garden copywork. You are free to download them for your children! Help yourself. :-)

The kiddos also had their Italian lesson. They are progressing really well. The teacher just loves their enthusiasm. Yay! :-)

Wordless Wednesday- September 26
Yesterday (Tuesday), we visited "Howell Living History Farm." We got to experience some more of what life was like in the early 1900s. The theme was "wheat." The kids got to plant wheat, pull a horse plow (I don't think they realized quite how heavy it was), thresh, winow and grind the wheat. They also got to taste bread that was made with the grinded wheat topped with butter that they churned. I just love hands-on learning. I truly believe kids learn by DOING and "do" they did! :-) Much, much fun.

Try a New Recipe Tuesday- September 25
It is Tuesday again! :-) And that means it is recipe time. Every week, I look forward to all that will be posted and to trying something new.
In fact, this week, I am sharing a recipe that was linked up last week. I made just a few modifications for my family. Thanks to Jan @ Tip Garden for the delicious recipe and idea! :-)
Crockpot Corn and Potato Chowder
One can corn (I used one of ours that we recently canned!)
one can creamed corn
one can cream of mushroom soup
one can chicken broth
6 potatoes diced
12 oz. milk
1/2 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
pepper to taste
1 chopped onion
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons sour cream
sprinkle of parsley
Combine all ingredients in crockpot. Since it was a last minute decision, lol, I put it on high for 3 hours. I'm sure low for 6 would be just fine, as well. It was DELICIOUS and perfect for a cool beginning of fall day. :-)

Make Life Meaningful Monday- September 24
There are always many things that make my life meaningful on a Monday. On this day, they are our church friends. We are so blessed to have found a church home that is welcoming and warm, vibrant and active and good and holy. We were made to feel at home from the minute we walked in the door. The journey to find a church home was not an easy one, but I really believe that God lead us to where He wanted us to be and the journey "home" wasn't without trial or pain, but we have been so rewarded in so many ways.
On Saturday, we held a fundraiser for our family retreat. (that is such an extraordinary experience. I can't wait to blog about it come late October!) We hold several fundraisers over the course of the year so the cost for each family will be significantly reduced.
The fundraiser was a "Quizzo" night. What is Quizzo? It is a trivia-style game with tables of 10 people all dressed according to a theme that they pick. Last year's was a big success, so we on the committee opted for a second-go-round this year.
Our table's theme was Hawaiian luau and boy did we deck ourselves out. :-) We had so much fun. We did more laughing and just enjoyed being in each other's company. We do faith-sharing with each other weekly come Advent and Lent, but it has been awhile since Palm Sunday, so we were all so glad to all be together in the same place at the same time. :-)
We did really well, too, coming in 2nd place. We missed out by 2 points. We realized we shouldn't have changed a few answers here and there, but we were already winners. We got to spend the evening with dear friends and enjoy each other's food, drink and company. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that.

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up September 21
Another week in the books and I can say that my head is spinning a bit less, lol. :-) We're all getting back into the swing of things.
In my life/homeschool this week: Monday was my birthday. It was a fun day. Kiddo #1 had his first Chemistry class. Other than it being "too early," lol, he seemed to enjoy it. After that, the Kiddos and I played hookie from school work and hubby and I spent the day with them at the park and out to lunch. Hubby and I even got to go to the movies twice for my birthday-- once over the weekend and once on the actual night. Wow. :-) We saw "Last Ounce of Courage" over the weekend. I SO highly recommend the film. It truly has to be one of the best films I have seen in years. It was uplifting, inspiring, encouraging..... We saw "Expendables 2" on Monday. I did more laughing than I have in a long time. It was funny to see the "action heroes" of my youth now in their 60s. The rapport between them was hilarious, as well.
I posted some more pics from my birthday here. I even got to have an ice cream sundae for dinner. Can't get more fun than that, lol! ;-)
On Monday, I also posted about our weekend-- trip to the zoo, Kiddo #4's "Chocolate Pigie" and Kiddo #1's RC club picnic. You can see some awesome pics here.
Tuesday was an uneventful day. Grateful that a bad storm averted our area, and we ended up with just rain. We stayed close to home and indoors most of the time, as I wasn't taking for granted the tornado watches that were being posted. Got lots of school work done. Kiddo #2 is really enjoying his Oceanography study and both he and Kiddo #1 are progressing well with their Algebra I. Italian class was canceled this afternoon. I understand that the teacher didn't want to risk coming out in severe weather. The only time I ventured out was to take Kiddo #4 to sewing class. Her teacher couldn't make it on Thursday, so rescheduled for today. Kiddo put on the finishing touches on "Chocolate Pigie," sewing up the bottom and sewing his nostrils on.
I did host my recipe linkup. Lots of awesome recipes shared this week. I already tried one of them and will post all about it next week. :-) The party will remain open for the entire week, so if you have a recipe to share, please come and join us. On Wednesday, Kiddos #1 and 2 started an online class with Homeschool Connections. I am really pleased with not only the class, but with the WebEx feature that allows them to see and communicate with the teacher and the other students while simultaneously seeing the power point slide lecture. It was a very nice day (one would never know there was any bad weather the day before), so the kids enjoyed lots of backyard time. Have to love the feel and smell of fall in the air! :-) They also made me chocolate chip cookies and I got a belated "singing-to" for my birthday. I posted about it and shared more photos here.
On Thursday, Kiddo #4 had her make-up lesson for IEW that she had missed on Monday. She already was a very good writer, but today wrote a full rough draft for a paragraph that she is working on and is having fun while doing it. Everyone worked diligently on their subjects and enjoyed more outdoor time, as well. We were at church for our classes this afternoon. Kiddos #3 and 4 take class and Kiddos #1 and 2 are volunteer helpers. I am teaching 5th graders this year. Pray that I can inspire these youngsters to get to know and love Jesus. I made up a bingo game for them and brought in a fun film for today's class.
On Friday, after some school work in the morning, we will be heading over to church to help setup for our flea market, which will be held Saturday and Sunday. The proceeds from the flea market help offset the cost of our Family Retreat in October, so we are really hoping it will be successful. :-)
My favorite resource this week: Definitely the Saxon Teacher CDs. These videos go through the instruction, practice sets and problems of every chapter in the math book. This has been invaluable with Kiddos 1 and 2 in their study of Algebra. They can work on it independently which is awesome.
What I'm praying for: A local police officer was killed in the line of duty this week. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and their 5-month old daughter. I read part of her eulogy in the newspaper today. It was so beautiful and full of faith. I don't know them, but cannot help but be so incredibly moved and saddened by the tragedy and senseless loss. I cannot help but think that that could have been me. I was pregnant with 3 little ones when my husband shipped to Iraq for a year. I still thank God for sending my husband home to us safely and realize more everyday just how fragile and short life is. We never know the day or time.....

Thankful Thursday- September 20
Everyday I realize there is more and more for which to be thankful, especially every time I hear of a heartache, someone suffering, someone losing a loved one, a tragedy..... I have been trying to be appreciative of the little things-- to realize all of the precious gifts that are given to me every day-- perhaps ones that would be overlooked due to the "busy"ness of life...
So, that being said, I am thankful for
kids who spontaneously ask mom to bake something with them
and how much fun is had in the process
and the delicious "results" of their labor
Since hubby and I went out to a movie the night of my actual birthday, the kiddos hadn't had the chance to sing happy birthday to me. They very sweetly put a pile of the cookies on a plate and balanced number candles in between them to sing to me tonight. Too cute. :-) (and it would beat a store-bought cake anyday!) :-)

Wordless Wednesday- September 19
almost wordless again. :-) Here are some random shots from my birthday on Monday. Hubby and I took the kids to the park and out to lunch. And, when asked what I would want for my bday dinner, I went out on a limb and said ice cream sundaes. It only took 44 years, lol! It was fun. Happy Wednesday everyone! And, as a p.s., the recipe linky from yesterday will be open for the entire week. Come take a look and/or share a favorite of your own. :-)

Try a New Recipe Tuesday- September 18
It is Tuesday again and that means it's time for our little recipe party! :-)
As those of you who read my blog know, we have been doing lots of canning here. This week I am sharing how we canned our peaches.
remove skins from peaches (I read that some do it by placing peaches in boiling then cold water, but we found it easier just to skin them with a cucumber peeler)
remove pits, slice peaches into chunks
pack into jars (and pack them TIGHTLY. they really do shrink quite a bit. we are going to cut ours a bit smaller next time to fit more because, as you can see from the photos, they really did shrink)
Add boiling water or syrup with 1/2 inch headspace. We made a light syrup, which consists of 1 cup of sugar in 1 quart of water. Stir constantly so sugar melts and add to jars once it is at a boil.
Put in pressure canner for 10 minutes at 5 pounds of pressure. Enjoy! :-)

As those of you who read my blog know, we have been doing lots of canning here. This week I am sharing how we canned our peaches.
remove skins from peaches (I read that some do it by placing peaches in boiling then cold water, but we found it easier just to skin them with a cucumber peeler)
remove pits, slice peaches into chunks
pack into jars (and pack them TIGHTLY. they really do shrink quite a bit. we are going to cut ours a bit smaller next time to fit more because, as you can see from the photos, they really did shrink)
Add boiling water or syrup with 1/2 inch headspace. We made a light syrup, which consists of 1 cup of sugar in 1 quart of water. Stir constantly so sugar melts and add to jars once it is at a boil.
Put in pressure canner for 10 minutes at 5 pounds of pressure. Enjoy! :-)

Make Life Meaningful Monday- September 17
On this, my birthday, I am most happy to have had a beautiful weekend with my family. On Friday, we went on a field trip with a group of local homeschoolers to the Elmwood Park Zoo. We do visit the much larger Philadelphia Zoo frequently, but really enjoy the change of pace with a smaller, quiet, more picturesque zoo. They give free admission to military families (isn't that wonderful?), so I make sure that I always buy my children lunch there and a little something in the gift shop to express my thanks to the zoo's administration for honoring and remembering my husband's service.
The zoo is home to animals indigenous to North and South America. All of the photos below were taken by Kiddo #1 (except for the one that he is in when I had to wrestle the camera from him, lol!)
Kiddo #4 and I also went to the local arts and crafts store to buy some fluff for the little pig that she made in sewing class. I am so proud of her. She did an awesome job on it. The people in the store told her that she thought it was store-bought. That made her day! :-)

After Church on Sunday, Kiddo #1, my husband, dad and I headed to the RC club's picnic at their flying field. Kiddo #1 enjoys the time not only to fly his planes (which he did SO well!), but is able to talk to all of the other members and gain from their wisdom and experience. I have to say how impressed I am with the members of the club. They are all so nice; happy to see a young man interested in the hobby and so willing to help him in any way possible. One gentleman helped Kiddo #1 with some repairs and coached him as he was flying. Another even told him today that he has a plane he would like to GIVE him! Wow.
Kiddos 2, 3, and 4 got to spend the afternoon with their grandmother and got taken out to dinner. :-)
