Make Life Meaningful Monday- April 30

My children participated in a wonderful program at the library today.  We just love the library!  They offered a program for homeschoolers today by Mad Science.  It was entitled "Che-Mystery."  :-)

They learned about substances, chemical vs. physical changes and acids vs. bases.  They got to witness different types of changes (my favorite was the packing peanuts getting literally decimated by acetone!)

They made (and taste-tested) their own soda and also grew their own crystals.

And, the best part was that it was free!  Yay!  :-)  It is wonderful to be able to take part in such programs and have a good learning experience.  The librarian said the response was overwhelming.  They ran two sessions and both had wait lists!  My kids were happy to see a lot of friends in the room and had fun learning together.  And, I got to take advantage of the half-price book sale, as well!  ;-)

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-up April 27

It seems like as soon as a week starts, I am writing this week-ending post!  :-)  It has been rainy/dreary and cold here.  We had a warm winter and now a cold spring.  Go figure.  No plants in the garden yet.  I dutifully take them in every night and am even having to transfer them into bigger containers because it is just not warm enough for them to go outside.  Oh well.....onto the week!

In our homeschool/my life this week:  Monday started with a breakfast for my mom's birthday.  I talked about it here.  In the afternoon, there were music lessons for all four kiddos and Kiddos 1 and 2 had their last Biology dissection lab.  They learned so much and had some great experiences with new friends.  They culminated the year with a fetal pig.  Out of respect for Kiddo #4 who does look at the pictures on my blog everyday and who absolutely loves everything "pigie" related, I am not posting any close up or detailed photos.  I am so proud of her brothers who mentioned *nothing* about the subject of the lab (aren't they sweet?).  :-)

On Tuesday, baseball was rained out, but we got to bowl instead.  Triple digits abound and they had a great time with their friends.

Kiddo #1 baked my mom a birthday cake.

I also hosted my weekly recipe linkup.  You can check all of this week's delicious entries here.

On Wednesday, we started a new character quality study which you can read more about here and continued with our regular work.

On Thursday, Kiddos 1 and 2 continued with the "Freedom" study that I posted about here.  They were so excited to try Betsy Ross' trick of making a five pointed star with just one snip of a scissors.  It works!  :-)

You can find the instructions on this website, which is also an amazing resource of all things American History.

Kiddo #4 had the guidance of her grandfather in doing her sewing homework and was very happy to continue work on her doll's nightgown at her lesson this afternoon.  :-)

Kiddo #3 read me a story today and I really enjoyed getting read *to* for a change!  :-)  He read me the story of Noah's Ark.  He then got the brainstorm to make a Power Point of the story, but using photos of my husband and I as Mr. and Mrs. Noah and he and his brothers were the three sons.  The beard he put on his dad was just TOO funny.  What laughter there was before bed with that one!  I need to ask him to put the presentation back on the computer so I can get a picture of it!  :-)

We also had classes at church and Kiddo #1 went to his first Civil Air Patrol meeting.  He really enjoyed it and is looking forward to continuing with the program.

Not sure quite what Friday will hold in store, but I know I am going to continue asking the kiddos to put together their "wish lists" of what they would like to learn next year.  So far, Kiddo #1 has come up with Astronomy, the Revolutionary War and airplanes.  Go figure!  ;-)

What I'm reading: 31 Days to Clean: Getting a Martha house the Mary Way, A Mother's Rule of Life

Who I'm praying for: My husband's grandmother is home from the rehab.  She has a bit of a road ahead, but has come SO far.  I am also praying for friends who have family members who are ill, unemployed or have other special intentions.

A quote or photo to share: "Teachers mediate too much. --Everything is directed, expected, suggested. No other personality out of book, picture, or song, no, not even that of Nature herself, can get at the children without the mediation of the teacher. No room is left for spontaneity or personal initiation on their part."--Charlotte Mason

I am definitely trying to get out of that mindset and allow for a lot of spontaneity and being led by their interests.  :-)

I just love moments like this when they are having so much fun together!  :-)

Thankful Thursday April 26

Did you ever have a book or activity that really worked with your kids?  Something they really enjoyed doing that seemed to encourage thinking and discussion?  A couple of years ago, there was a free offering on CurrClick.  I downloaded it, printed it out and subsequently forgot all about it.  That is until Rebecca at Mom's Mustard Seeds began her Freedom Fridays program.  I instantly remembered the "Celebrate Freedom" unit/lapbook study and my older two children have really enjoyed diving into everything "Freedom"-- whether it be the words of the Star Spangled Banner, the proper folding of a flag or the biographies of the Founding Fathers, they are doing it and doing it enthuisiastically!  :-)  For that, I am very thankful!  :-)

Look! What we did! Wednesday April 25

I know Character Education is something everyone tries to incorporate into their homeschool and there are so many different ways to accomplish it.  This next month we are looking at "Gratefulness."  I have found some wonderful worksheets online for all of the age groups of my children, asking questions that get them to think on their own level, whether it is "what can you do and say to express this quality" for the younger set or "name a person in history that is an excellent example of this quality and write how he/she exemplified it" for the olders.

In addition to the worksheets and great discussions, I started making flashcards of each quality we have studied thus far and its meaning.

It is my hope, that as we study these principles, discussing how we can apply them in our own lives and looking up to the examples of those who have lived them, we will become better people ourselves.

Try a New Recipe Tuesday April 24th

It's that time again!  :-)  I am really looking forward to trying all of the recipes that are getting linked each week.  They all look delicious!

As for my recipe this week, I am sharing my Vegetarian Chili recipe.  This is a pretty quick and easy recipe that goes over really well.  Even my "meat and potatoes" hubby really enjoys it!  :-)  Last week, I served it over egg noodles.  I have served it over rice, pasta, noodles, mashed potatoes or just by itself.

Lisa's Vegetarian Chili
1 19 oz. can black beans (I use organic or the ones I canned myself)
1 15 oz. can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 15 oz. can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
1 16 oz. can vegetarian baked beans
1 14.5 can chopped tomatoes in puree
1 15 oz. can corn, drained
1 onion chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 tbls. chili powder
1 tbls. dried parsley
1 tbls. dried oregano
1 tbls. dried basil

4-5 hours in crockpot on low
2 hours on high

Enjoy!  :-)

I can't wait to see what delicious recipes are linked up this week!

Make Life Meaningful Monday April 23

Each week, I look forward to doing this post, as I do the "Thankful Thursday" one because I get to stop the "rat race" for a short time and really focus on what is important and how much there is that is meaningful and for which to be thankful.

Today is my mom's birthday.  Each of her birthdays after she beat cancer 15 years ago has taken on new meaning, and we are grateful for each and every one.  No one knows the day or the time, so as I've gotten older, I've become more thankful for each of my own birthdays, as well.  They are all a gift; a gift of time.  How we use that time is up to us.  It is a precious gift with much possibility.  I am making a real concerted effort, whether in our homeschool or in our everyday life, to not get caught up in the "small" stuff, the things that truly do not matter and try to always have a grateful heart in all things.  Not the easiest of tasks, but I'm working on it!  :-)

On a little bit of a lighter note, my dad wanted to take us all out for breakfast this morning to celebrate my mom's birthday.  Although she is blessed to sometimes be able to work from home, she had a meeting and was unable to join us.  So, we went and had a celebratory breakfast in her honor, lol!  :-)  We did take her back some takeout, though!  :-)  The photo below is of the kiddos and my dad.

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up April 20

In my life/homeschool this week: On Friday afternoon, we visited the library and took out some more books for our Powerpoint book reports.  Of course, I had to visit the used book sale while I was there, lol.  I found books for the kiddos, my mom and myself, all for about $4.50!  :-)

On Saturday, Kiddo #1 made dinner and dessert.  I posted about this and other helpful things that the other kiddos have done this week on my Thankful Thursday post here.

Monday had all of the kiddos having their music lessons and Kiddos 1 and 2 in their dissection class.  There is only one more week!  They dissected a frog this week.

Tuesday was the first day of the kiddos' homeschool baseball league.  It will last for 6 weeks.  The kids had a great time and did really well!  :-)

On Wednesday, Kiddos 1 and 2 did a special history project I put together.  They "designed" their own colonial homes.  They had the challenge of creating a liveable, workable space for their entire family in a cabin that was no bigger than 16 x 21 feet.  You can see more pics and read all about it here.

Thursday was an AWESOME day!  The Franklin Institute museum offers monthly classes for homeschooled students.  The kiddos had a blast and learned so much!  The topic this month was Earth Science.  They put crayons through the rock cycle, learned about the different types of rock, erosion, volcanoes, and the list can go on.  We are really looking forward to attending next month for the chemistry themed program.  And, as an added bonus, they got to welcomed by Ben Franklin himself, who was quite impressed when Kiddo 4 starting listing all of his accomplishments to him.  :-)

What I am reading: A Mother's Rule of Life and 31 Days to Clean: getting a Martha house the Mary Way

What is working: Definitely hands-on programs like the Franklin Institute and the history project I did this week

A quote or photo to share: "Childhood is not preparation for adulthood - it is a part of life." - A. Neill
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - William Butler Yeats

The kids had to design a way to save their "houses" from getting washed away from mudslides/erosion.  :-)
