Try a New Recipe Tuesday- April 1st

Happy April!  Hopefully Spring will have sprung for all of us soon.  :-)  This week I am sharing a Cornbread in the breadmaker.  I had always made it in the oven.  It was super good.  It is linked in the first spot below.  :-)

Cornbread in the Breadmaker

I have made cornbread and cornbread muffins in the oven before, but hadn't yet tried a yeasted one in the breadmaker.  I tweaked the recipe and came up with a delicious version.

3 cups flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons white sugar
3 tablespoons shortening
1 cup milk
1/8 cup water
1 egg
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Place the ingredients in the bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer and press start.

Transfer the bread from the pan to a rack to cool.

This was a great treat.  It was all gone by the end of dinner.  :-)

TOS Review: Captivated (the movie)

Today I am reviewing Captivated DVD from Media Talk 101.

This is a must-watch!  I am not kidding.  This runner-up for Best Documentary at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, "Captivated" is about "finding freedom in a media captive culture."  It was also the winner of the 2013 Best Documentary at the Glory Reelz Christian Film Festival.  How much are we all enslaved and addicted to technology?  How does that dependence affect our physical and spiritual lives and relationships?  Listening to the scientists, doctors, writers and theologians opened my eyes.

This video really got me to think about how much is really too much.  What effects do television, computers, cell phones and social media websites have on our children, our families and ourselves?  If we were to count the number of hours that we spend with our family that do not involve any form of media, I bet we would all be very surprised and shocked how little it would be in comparison.  We are saturating our minds with media.  It robs us of precious time with God and our family.  No wonder we have so "little time" in our lives. God wants to be first in our lives, then our spouses and children.  Many today, sadly, have put media first.  It is the first thing they go to as soon as they open their eyes, and the last thing they see before retiring for the evening.

Not only is the amount of time spent on media (and yes, there are many good aspects of media) staggering and affects our lives, but the content of much on television and in movies today is pure trash.  I heard someone say once that why would we put such horrific and/or offensive images into our minds-- where they will never be forgotten.  We don't put garbage into our mouths.  It shouldn't go into our minds, either.  Did you know that there are 12 times as many R movies as G movies released, yet G movies bring in 11 times more?!

Yes, graphic video games and movies have a horrific impact on our young people.  It doesn't take memorizing of psychological data to realize that.  It is common sense, yet there are so many young people who are immersed in this violent sub-culture.  Just open a newspaper or turn on the news to see how it has impacted our society.  Equally as impacting, however, is the sheer number of hours spent on media.  It is something that alienates family members, instead of bringing them together.  I truly believe that society goes as the family goes.  If we do not have quality and quantity of family time each and every day, there will be repercussions.  I believe there have already been.  Have you seen the photos of groups of friends together, yet no one is talking to each other.  They are all staring at their iphones.  There is a photo of a couple out on a date.  They are not even looking at each other or engaging in conversation.  They are looking at their internet on their phones.

Did you know that most homes have more televisions than humans or that most children spend an average of 53 hours a week in front of a screen of some sort?  Those are just some of the sobering and staggering statistics that are presented in the film.

There is also much encouragement-- testimonies of those who have broken their addictions and are leading happier, more fulfilling lives with their families.  They are spending more time together-- more outings, outdoor time and togetherness even while in the home.  How many are home together, but everyone is sitting in front of a computer or television?  That is not togetherness.  That is not what family is all about.  There can be family board games, reading aloud, or playing of musical instruments.  The children can put on plays for their parents or reading pages from their home-written chapter book.  The possibilities are endless!

Captivated is available for $16.95 and is intended for adult viewers, but is safe for your entire family.

Watch the trailer here.  I know it will "captivate" you, as it did me.

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up- March 28/29

Sorry for the tardiness of this post.  It has been a busy few days.  :-)

Last Friday was 4-H .22 rifle practice.

On Saturday morning early, the boys had driving practice with their 4-H Tractor safety class.  Their state-licensing exams are next week (written and driving).  Wish them luck!  :-)

and then they headed to the last of a series of classes for 4-H teens.  This class had them in the greenhouses.  Look what my teen boys made me!  I was impressed!  :-)

We went from spring weather and bike riding on Saturday to snow on Tuesday!

Granted, it wasn't that much, but the calendar says "spring!"  We are done with winter.  Hopefully, Mother Nature is, too.

Many of our seeds have turned to plants and are growing well.

Our Lent is going well.  (look for a special 5-day series coming up this week!!)  Our kind words Cross and good deeds jar are beginning to fill.  We continue to read special books and attend special services that remind us of what this season is truly all about.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  God bless!  :-)

TOS Review- Spelling You See

I was so excited at the opportunity to review this brand new product.  Many people have heard of the Math- U-See program.  Well, Math-U-See has a brand new baby sister and her name is Spelling You See.  :-)
This review is about the Level E book entitled "American Spirit."

The program was developed by Dr. Karen Holinga.  She is a former elementary school teacher and college professor.  She has worked with children for over 30 years.

Spelling You See teaches spelling naturally and at the child's own individual pace.  The instructor gives encouragement and direction.

There are no spelling lists or weekly spelling tests (that already made it a hit, lol!).  The student works on engaging and fun daily activities that incorporate writing, reading, speaking and listening.  They will, due to their long-term visual memory, remember letter patterns and over time be able to include correct spelling in their everyday writing.

My daughter's book, Level E, which is entitled "American Spirit," includes passages from memorable people and events in American History.  They include Phillis Wheatley, Benjamin Franklin, Eli Whitney, Annie Oakley, Helen Keller, Harry Houdini, John D. Rockefeller and so many more!  I love that she is learning history while doing the program.  I am definitely an American history nerd!  :-)

Spelling You See includes three core student activities.  They are chunking, copywork and dictation.  They each play an important role in helping the brain to learn spelling patterns.

Chunking (marking vowel and/or consonant patterns with a marker or highlighter) each passage provides the student with hands-on learning of the many irregular letter patterns in our language.  Copywork and dictation require the child's brain to be aware of and pay attention to the details in print within a very meaningful context.  All working together, these three activities will move the words into the student's long-term memory and produce accomplished spellers.

There are 5 parts to each of the 36 weekly lessons.  There is the reading of the passage by the parent and child.  Next, they work on the chunking, which is finding and marking letter patterns (vowel blends, consonant blends, etc.).  There is copywork of the passage and finally dictation- writing the entire passage. The first time for dictation, the child can ask for help.  The second time, they do it without assistance.  My daughter is SO proud when writes out these passages and correctly, too!  :-)

We received the book and instructors manual in PDF form for the review purposes, but the paperback books are bright, colorful and full of illustrations of the people or places in each passage.

My daughter worked on an activity every day.  She read, chunked, listened and wrote.  And she learned words that she didn't know before, as well as learning a lot of American history.  The best part is that she ENJOYS doing it.  It is not the cumbersome copying of words over and over again of our youth, words that were not put into context or really understood.  It is learning them in context that makes all the difference.

Who knew spelling could be so fun (and educational in more ways than one?)      :-)

Spelling You See is now available.  The levels they offer are as follows:

Level A: Listen and Write
Level B: Jack and Jill
Level C: Wild Tales
Level D: Americana
Level E: American Spirit ** this was the level my daughter used
Level F: Ancient Achievements
Level G: Modern Milestones

For American Spirit, the Instructor's handbook is $14 and the Student Pack is $30

As for the recommended ages, it really depends on your child's ability.  There aren't "set" grade levels. Every child is different!  :-)  At their website, there are recommendations and descriptions of each level.  You can see that here.

We absolutely loved this product (can't you tell?) and my daughter is looking forward to finishing the book!  :-)

Homeschooling with Pinterest

Pinterest has become a real phenomenon and wealth of information for so many of us.  It is a place where you can find just about anything and "pin it" to your own virtual bulletin board for future reference.

You can find me on Pinterest here.  Come on over and say hello!  :-)

I am going to share with you some pins that could be helpful (and fun!) in homeschooling.

Here is one that has 3 different sets of free, printable flashcards (one set on bears, one on math formulas and one on measurements (pints, quarts, etc.)

Homemade Soft Pretzels

These were SO good.  We topped some with sea salt and others with cinnamon sugar.

4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 1/4 cups warm water
5 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup baking soda
4 cups hot water
sea salt for sprinkling
several tablespoons butter, melted

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in 1 1/4 cup warm water.  Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar and salt. (we omitted the salt in this step)

Make a well in the center; add the oil and yeast mixture.

Mix and form into a dough.  If the mixture is dry, add one or two more tablespoons of water.

Knead the dough until smooth, about 7-8 minutes.  Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl, and turn to coat with oil.

Cover in plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about one hour.

Preheat over to 450 degrees F.  Grease baking sheet.

In a large bowl, dissolve baking soda in 4 cups hot water, set aside.  When risen, turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape.

Once all of the dough is shaped, dip each pretzel into the baking soda-hot water solution and then place on baking sheet.  Sprinkle with sea salt, if desired.

Bake until browned, about 8 minutes.

For cinnamon sugar pretzels:  mix the 1/2 cup white sugar with the teaspoon of cinnamon until completely combined;  as soon as the pretzels come out of the oven, brush them with the melted butter and dip them in the cinnamon sugar.  Coat well.  :-)

Enjoy!  My kids (and we adults) devoured these.  They are already asking when we can make them again.  :-)
