Today I am reviewing the Exclusive High School Diploma from HomeschoolDiploma.com.



It is not quite sinking in that Kiddo #1 is graduating high school this year.  It got a little more real when I was contacted with the opportunity to review this beautiful fully customized diploma.  Kiddo sat right next to me and was able to select everything to make the diploma special and unique.  Isn't that one of the best parts of homeschooling-- to customize the entire educational experience to our student's needs, abilities and interests?  Kiddo and a group of other soon-to-be homeschooled graduates have been meeting to organize and put together their own commencement.  He even asked his grandfather to be the keynote speaker!  How appropriate, therefore, that he be able to choose his own diploma and personalize it just the way he would like.

TOS Review- Demme Learning's Math-U-See

Today I am reviewing Demme Learning's Math-U-See Pre-Algebra and Digital Pack.



For those of you who aren't already familiar with this program, Math-U-See is a complete skill-based multi-sensory mastery curriculum for grades K-12.  The Pre-Algebra universal set includes everything needed for the level including the Instruction Manual, Instruction DVD, Student Workbook, Tests Booklet, Integer Block Kit, Algebra/Decimal Inserts and 12 months of access to the Pre-Algebra Digital Pack. The Pre-Algebra level covers negative numbers (including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing negative numbers), the order of operations, solving for the unknown, number lines and more.


New is the Digital Pack.  What is that, you ask?  It is accessible through any internet browser and provides streaming video versions of the Instructional DVD, a PDF of the Instruction Manual, access to the online version of their Digital Manipulatives and links to free online resources.  What a great idea!  Math lessons accessed through the digital pack can be viewed and completed almost anywhere. Talk about convenience.  In addition, many children are extremely comfortable and adept with technology and will find it a great and fun way to do their math.  Unlike a DVD, the video on a device on phone can be rewound and watched again.  The manipulatives are there on the screen and can be moved around.  I believe the hands-on approach of Math-U-See, whether at your table or on your tablet/phone is what makes them stand out above the rest.  I have always been a proponent of tactile and hands-on learning.  It is what makes learning permanent and real for many kids.  Being able to see, hear and "touch" the math makes it easier for the student to understand the 'why' behind the lesson.  It begins to make real sense.  Math, then, is not just something you have to memorize, but real understanding is finally taking place.
How did we use the program? Kiddos watched each video (usually about 20 minutes in length), we discussed the lesson together and then they would work on the worksheets that were associated with each lesson.  If there were manipulatives for that lesson, they would either use the physical ones or try them out with the digital pack.  Kiddo #3 is a very computer-oriented kid, so he preferred to use the digital pack on his own computer.  When each lesson's materials were completed, the kiddos worked on the test from the test booklet.  The student text and test booklet are included with the universal set.  If you purchase the digital pack, you can purchase the student text and test booklet separately.

Mr. Demme's style is easy to understand and he intersperses humor in each lesson.  In the ratio lesson photographed above, he spoke about cars that his kids were counting out the window on a road trip. He has a gift for making the information realistic and relevant.

TOS Review- The Critical Thinking Co.

Today I am reviewing Surfing the Net: Science from The Critical Thinking Co.

I cannot believe that this is my last review of the year!  This has been the 3rd year that I have been a part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew.  I look forward to another adventure with them next year.

Now, onto telling you all about this wonderful resource!  The book is geared toward upper elementary and middle school science was an amazing fit for our family.  Not only did it cover topics that were of great interest to my kids, it encouraged and guided internet-based research, which when done responsibly, is a critical skill for our children to learn to be successful in our society today.

This type of learning is called Inquiry-Based learning.  What exactly is that?  Inquiry-Based Learning is an instructional method that can enhance experiential learning by allowing youth to construct their own learning using scientific processing skills to explore and gather evidence about a variety of phenomena in an investigative manner.  Is this not what true learning is all about?  Teaching our children/students to explore, gather and investigate and having them construct their own learning, not telling them *what* to learn.  We become their facilitators and guide their learning, but they are doing the work (and enjoying it at the same time!)

While engaged in inquiry-based learning, youth direct their learning in a way that is similar to how science happens in real world situations. Students are able to identify their own areas of inquiry and engage in hands-on learning using science process skills to seek information. This results in increased ownership of learning and enhanced critical thinking skills, while creating a culture that values learners’ ideas.  The Critical Thinking Company hit the nail on the head with this approach, especially in the sciences.  Enhancing critical thinking skills and engaging children in a hands-on manner.  This is truly what my educational philosophy has always been about-- from when I was in a classroom or now in my own homeschool.

There are 7 disciplines of science covered in the book and 46 topics of study (something for absolutely everyone! from those disciplines).  They are:

• Ecosystems and Habitats
• Energy
• Geology
• Plants
• Space

Some of the topics covered are oceans, the solar system, insects, grasslands, plate tectonics, nuclear energy, reptiles and more!

This 250 page resource is an engaging, reproducible book packed with interesting activities.  The websites that are included are all free and completely safe for our children.  The suggested activities include watching videos, investigating websites, searching for different images, playing online games, reading articles, engaging in interactive, educational websites and more.  It is all hands-on and definitely not boring!  While the kids are learning and engaging in these important computer skills, they are learning about science.  Talk about a win-win situation!

We will definitely continue to use this book for the rest of the school year.  I feel like we have barely scratched the surface of the many topics available.  Kiddos 3 and 4 have enjoyed it thus far and I know will continue to do so. 

My generation utilized card catalogs and encyclopedias that were dated before even going to publication.  This generation has literally the world at their fingertips and it changes daily.  What a wonderful resource to have-- an educational program that encourages them, not only in scientific pursuits, but in the ever-changing and challenging world of technology.

TOS Review- Standard Deviants Accelerate

Today I am reviewing Standard Deviants Accelerate's homeschool courses.

Do you remember the Standard Deviants videos on VHS tape (or am I showing my age?  lol)?  I enjoyed watching them and showing them to students when I was a classroom teacher.  So, needless to say, I was excited when given the opportunity to review their homeschool program.

They have so many options and courses for grades 3-12, including Advanced Placement.  The courses are as follows:

When I first received access to the program, I was on a parent's page where I set up my account.  I chose the course for my son and was given an access code.  When his account was set up (on a separate student screen), that access code was entered.  I did this for him. The program does require a separate email address for the student.

Once the code was entered, he was ready to begin.  The videos are fast paced and presented by college-aged actors and actresses.  They are very catchy with a lot of movement, music and sound. The videos were about 10-15 minutes long.  Some even shorter.

After the student views the video, they can go to the tab that has all of the vocabulary that was used in the lesson.  The diagram tab brings the student to a grab and drag section with the words from the lesson.  If they put the word in the incorrect section, the word will not stay.  The quiz section has 5 questions from the video.  If the child gets one wrong, it will show the segment of the video that explains the correct answer.  I like the instant feedback and explanation!  The last tab, written explanation, is one that is graded by the parent.  The material in every tab can be printed out for those who like to have a printed record to read and study.

Kiddo found that these videos were a "fun and different" way to do math and certainly a welcome supplement to his current program.  It was very fast-paced and sometimes with math, you will need, as we did, to watch something more than once, especially if it is the first time they are being exposed to the particular topic.  I like that the program had visual, auditory and tactile components-- something for every learning style!

TOS Review- Koru Naturals

Today I am reviewing Skin Clear Cream, Manuka Honey Propolis Soap and the Emu Oil Shampoo and Emu Oil Leave-in Conditioner Set from Koru Naturals.

It was exciting to actually be reviewing a product for me-- and one that involved some pampering, which is a definite rare treat.  I have really tried, over the years, to use as many all-natural products for my family as possible, whether that be in our food or in our toilitries. There are so many dangerous chemicals and additives in shampoos, soaps and other hygiene types of products today, so it was so refreshing to see a company that prides itself on making items that not only are effective, smell wonderful and are all natural to boot.

Let me preface all of this with the fact that I have extremely sensitive skin and do not like smells that are overpowering.  In fact, they bother my allergies.  None of these products bothered my skin or allergies!  I truly believe it is because of the all-natural ingredients.  They were gentle, yet effective and the aromas were extremely pleasant.

As I mentioned above, I received the following:

• Skin Clear Cream  It comes in a 4 oz. jar and is a very pleasant smelling moisturizing cream.  I have extremely dry skin due to my thyroid.  I applied this two times a day and it has made a definite difference.  The skin on my face feels soft and smooth for a change!  The cream is also effective for those with blemishes or acne-prone skin.  This all-natural product's ingredients include pure steam-distilled Manuka oil, raw, unpasteurized Manuka honey and other botanical ingredients.  It sells for $19,20.  I have used in twice a day for quite a while now and it looks like I haven't used very much at all.  A small dab goes a long way.  This jar will last quite a while.

•  Manuka Honey Propolis Soap  This bar soap uniquely shaped as a pentagon is 4.93 ounces.  What a delightful product!  It protects the skin while moisturizing.  Its ingredients include Manuka honey and Propolis from bee hives.  What is Propolis?  It is a resinous mixture that bees use to fill unwanted holes in their hives.   Thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations used Propolis for its medicinal properties.  It sells for $7.90

• Emu Oil Shampoo and Emu Oil Leave-in Conditioner My hair is also damaged due to my thyroid, so these products geared toward hair that needs repair were a welcome addition to my "beauty" routine.  The leave-in conditioner is in a spray bottle.  It cannot get much easier than that.  The ingredients include Keratin from sheep's wool that repairs split ends.  Keratin has been known to help keep hair strong, elastic and healthy.  It needs to stay on the hair in order to have the desired effect, thus why it is a leave-in conditioner.  The shampoo and conditioner ingredients include Australian emu oil.  The natural healing comes from the Emu bird, only found in Australia.  It's natural, non-toxic and gentle on all skin types.  Emu oil has been known to have extraordinary healing properties.  The Aborigines have used it for centuries.  It is extremely healthy for the hair, particularly when it comes to hair loss (I need help in this department due to my nasty thyroid, as well!), but also to strengthen existing hair, remove frizz and promote shine.  These are available for $17.10 for both the 8oz. shampoo and 4oz. conditioner. My hair is definitely softer and shinier and has not been falling out as much.  Wow!

I am so very pleased with these all-natural, effective products.  I know you will be, as well.

TOS Review- Faith of our Fathers

Today I am reviewing Faith of our Fathers from FishFlix.com



I was so grateful to be able to review this film.  I was drawn to it because as many of you know, my husband spent 25+ years in the Army and fought in 2 wars.  I felt like in many ways, the film told some of my story.  You see, I was a pregnant mama saying goodbye to my husband for a deployment 12 years ago.  I yearned for those letters that would come in the mail.  I would look out the window every day and when I did not see the black car pull up, I would look up, offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God and try my best to go on with my day for my young children.  There are many, tragically, who do see that car and their lives are changed forever by that horrible reality.  They draw strength, as I did during that year, from their faith, family and friends.



This beautiful family film brought to us from the same studio that made "God is Not Dead" (another of my absolute favorites!) weaves together two storylines-- one of two young men fighting in Vietnam and one of their grown sons many years later back at home.  The human element of war is presented in a way that is real and touching.  War involves human beings, many times young human beings who have fear, develop strong bonds with their fellow soldiers and turn to God for strength.

The sons of the soldiers meet many years later while at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Through letters and then meeting each other, the young men learn about their dads, who they were and how much they were truly loved by their fathers.  One never met his dad (his mom was pregnant during the war) and he learns through letters written from his dad to his mom about how excited he was about the baby and how he was hoping he was a boy.  The other young man has letters from his dad.  Though they seem very different from one another, these sons have a bond and a commonality between them that can never be broken.

My husband and I watched the movie one night after the kids were all in bed.  It has some war action (thus the PG-13 rating), but no real blood or violence.  There was no strong language either, which I much appreciated.  We will be watching this again soon with our entire family.  We really want to share this with them.  The message and lessons are so very important and something that we want our kids to learn and appreciate-- the themes of friendship, loyalty, love, devotion and faith.  Not just as military kids, but for all American children.  You will not regret sharing this quality film with your family.

This movie had me laughing one moment and crying the next.  What a date night movie!  Seriously, for this Christian, military family.  It is the best kind.

TOS Review- Progeny Press

Today I am reviewing the Study Guide for Sarah, Plain and Tall by Progeny Press.



This is such a delightful classic that I was excited to read with my daughter.  To have the Study Guide to accompany our reading was a wonderful asset.



If you are not familiar with the Progeny Press Study Guides, they are comprised of 8 parts that include:

The Study Guide was interactive and had many opportunities for my daughter to really think about the various themes in the novel.  It goes way past basic comprehension questions, which is quite important.  Students who develop higher-order thinking skills become life-long learners--capable of analyzing new situations, relating new information to what they already know and thinking critically and creatively to solve problems, improve processes and understand their world.

Higher level thinking is thinking on a level that is higher than memorizing facts or telling something back to someone exactly the way it was told to you.  When a person memorizes and gives back the information without having to think about it, that is rote memory.  That is because it is much like a robot; it does what it is programmed to do, but it does not think for itself.

Progeny's Study Guide ($17.99) takes thinking to higher levels than restating the facts.  The student understands them, infers from them, connects them to other facts and concepts categorizes them; manipulates them and puts them together in new or novel ways, and applies them as they seek new solutions and ideas.

In addition to these higher-level thinking skills, there are fun, hands-on activities such as a variety of puzzles and a recipe from the era that Sarah would have made.  My daughter loved trying it out!

For those of you that have not read "Sarah, Plain and Tall," it is a heartwarming story told by Anna, a young girl in 1910 Kansas who had recently lost her mom.  Her dad is having a hard time raising his children and running his farm without the help of a wife.  He puts an ad in the paper for a bride to help him and gets a response from a woman named Sarah.

This sweet, historical novel about loneliness and family, about the relationship between Anna, her brother Caleb and their dad, and eventually with Sarah, teaches much about love, resilience and redemption.

Progeny Press' mission statement reads "To teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature and to rely on the Scripture for Truth and values and enjoy themselves while they do it!"  It is no wonder that they selected a story like 'Sarah'-- and why you and your family will be delighted by both the novel and the guide.

TOS Review- Fascinating Education

Today I am reviewing Fascinating Chemistry, an online program offered by Fascinating Education.

This 18-lesson introductory program is geared toward the right-brain.  Dr. Marguiles, the founder and creator of Fascinating Education, supplements his narration with drawings, photographs, animation and other illustrations.  This engages the right as well as the left hemispheres of the brain.  Most tasks in life involve the contributions from both hemispheres.  So, it is important that Dr. Marguiles is engaging both in his "classroom" content.

When problems are represented at higher levels of abstraction, learning can be integrated into larger schemas that enhance memory, learning and cognitive flexibility.  Starting with major concepts and repeatedly returning to them during a visually simulating lecture enhances understanding and memory, a phenomenon that will increase as the two hemisphere stimulation continues.

Dr. Marguiles is a neurologist and understands very well how the brain works and how to most effectively present information that will not only be learned, but retained.

Kiddo #2 worked on the lessons several times a week.  He most especially liked that real-life scenarios were used and that the lessons followed a story-line.  It was not, in his words, "dry and boring" like most science books.  I find it sad that a subject that can be so engaging and interesting becomes so dull in most classrooms today.  No wonder our kids do not want to pursue careers in the sciences!

I liked that there was a scripted text available of each lesson's presentation.  This was helpful for Kiddo's review and for me to be able to keep up with what he was learning without having to watch the entire lecture myself.  There are quizzes to test progress as well as labs and chemistry math problems to solve.  The labs consist of a printable pdf that explains not only its purpose, but how it links to the lesson, what is needed to conduct it and instructions on how to complete it.  Most simply used commonly-found household items.

Each lesson includes a menu that allows the student to gauge his/her progress.  They can always re-watch a segment if need be.  A feature I liked especially is the "Catching Your Breath" slides and "What You Know So Far," ones that review the material covered to that point.

The program is engaging both visually and auditorily and has features that will well-equip your student as either a full curriculum or a supplement to your current program.  There is also a Fascinating Physics and Fascinating Biology.  My colleagues on the Crew reviewed these, as well.

TOS Review- Super Teacher Worksheets

Today I am reviewing Super Teacher Worksheets, for which I received an Individual Membership.



I am trying to find the words to adequately express how completely awesome I found this website!

This site offers over 10,000 worksheets, activities and games.  Yes, over 10,000.  There are also generators where the teacher can make their own flashcards, quizzes, word puzzles and customized math worksheets.

And, if that is not enough for any homeschool mom to do a happy dance, there are also math card games, reading comprehension games, phonics mini-books, memory match games and SO MUCH MORE.

The resources are available in the following categories:

• reading and writing
• phonics and early literacy
• handwriting
• grammar
• spelling lists and worksheets (grades 1-5 and more grades being added!)

• puzzles and brain teasers

In our 4-H group, we are going to be doing some fall and winter animal studies.  I found a great animal-themed scavenger hunt game that we are going to use with the group as an introduction to those studies.  It looks like so much fun. (and very thorough, as well)  For this game, each child is given two worksheets with all kinds of questions on it about various animals.  The answers to these questions can be found from the cards that are "hidden."

Kiddos 3 and 4 are taking an online middle school math class and are learning about some Algebraic concepts.  I am looking forward to using many of the beginning Algebra worksheets available on Super Teacher Worksheets as review and reinforcement for them.

In addition to everything that is offered above, the screen scrolled down to offer even more Algebra choices including Basic Algebra Vocabulary, Algebraic Equations: True or Not True, Algebra Tables, Algebra Word Problems and Equations.  These are definitely an impressive and varied offering for older students.

We have covered the continents and oceans of the world and of course, Super Teacher Worksheets would have something perfect as a reinforcement and review.  I especially liked how this particular offering had the student writing out the names rather than just matching or notating a letter or number.  When the actual name is written, there are connections being made in the brain and there is practice for being able to spell the names correctly.

This year we have also learned about latitude, longitude and the hemispheres.  On the worksheets that were offered, there were matching and multiple choice questions as well as short answer.  This indeed is not "busy" work, but having the students actually use some higher level thinking skills and be able to formulate their responses in writing.

We are big fans of family game night activities and Super Teacher Worksheets did not disappoint in that area, either.  We enjoyed this Moon and space game.

I also made a lot of use of the generator.  In the area of math, there are 8 different generators available including basic and advanced operations.  There is a bingo and flashcard generator in addition to an abc order generator.  The puzzles that can be generated are:

• word search maker
• crossword puzzle
• word scrambler
• missing letters

You can make the following quizzes:

• multiple choice
• matching
• fill-in-the-blanks
• short answer/essay (you will be able to professionally format your essay tests and store them on STW for use anytime)

Newsletter and calendar generation is also available.

We are studying the Ancients this year and I used the Bingo generator to make a fun review of the vocabulary and concepts from the first few chapters.

All of this is available for $19.95 for an entire year.  I know you will enjoy this website as much as I have.  I was so very pleasantly surprised how much was available for older students.  They have an enormous amount of materials for the younger set, as well, but to include material for older students (since my youngest is now in 6th grade) makes it a definite winner for the Home to 4 Kiddos!
