TOS Review- Time 4 Learning

Today I am reviewing Time 4 Learning.  It is an online educational program for Pre-K through high school.

There are lower school, upper school and high school levels.  Kiddo #4, being in 4th grade, was in the "upper school,"  She was pretty proud of that.  :-)

The program can be used as a complete curriculum or as a supplement.  We used it as a supplement to other materials that we are currently using.

Everyday, Kiddo would log in with her own password (brings students to their own menus) and her available subjects come up on the screen.  She liked the fact that she could choose which subject to do first.  :-)

The material is presented in an engaging, animated fashion that keeps a child's attention.  In the math section, for example, there was a lot of reinforcement of the lesson with a variety of activities and quizzes.

There is a portfolio available under the children's screen that shows the child what he/she has completed.  In addition, there are progress reports kept that the parent can access and even print out for their own recordkeeping purposes.  There are also lesson plans available (see below) for every subject and activity.

The parent also has access to additional resources such as reading and spelling lists and science supplies that are needed.

There is also a playground section and an art section.  After your first month, you have access to the art program.  Since we are just getting access to that, I cannot elaborate on it much, but it does look like a lot of fun.  Kiddo #4 loves art, so she is looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.  The playground has fun and educational games that challenge a child's critical thinking.  I liked that the parent can control the time limits on this part of the program.

We are eclectic homeschoolers who use a lot of living books and literature, so I would not use Time4Learning as a complete curriculum but my daughter found it fun and engaging as a supplement to her other studies.  The math, especially, was excellent for reinforcing what she has already learned as well as introducing some new topics in a way that was easy to understand.  The concepts are repeated often and the children learn about them in a hands-on manner.  For example, when she was learning about expressing numbers in an expanded form, she got to manipulate and move animations around to make her own numbers.  She selected and clicked the boxes she wanted (tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.) and the program kept a running account of the total.  That was really neat and a great way to illustrate the topic rather than just telling a child about it.
