TOS Review- Logic of English

Today I am reviewing The Rhythm of Handwriting by Logic of English.

I am a firm believer in children learning cursive handwriting.  It is really disheartening that in the schools today, cursive handwriting isn't being taught at all.  An entire generation of functional illiterates who won't be able to sign their name, read a memo or notes written on a board has been created.  :-(

The Rhythm of Handwriting workbook and laminated tri-fold chart were easy to use and navigate.

The chart gave step by step instructions that were easy to read and follow.

The program uses a multi-sensory approach to learning cursive-- starting first with large motor movements.  Therefore the letters are actually in the student's muscle memory before a pencil ever hits paper.  :-)

Kiddos 3 and 4 worked on this about 15-20 minutes a day.  Each letter was taught individually before moving on to combinations of letters and words.  The book presents letters with similar characteristics one right after the other so the student can see the patterns.  There are practice sheets with all size lines, so kids can start large and concentrate on technique before worrying about size.

Kiddos 3 and 4 have learned cursive before, but this was a wonderful and thorough review for them that certainly solidified their skills.  What really interested me in the 10 page teacher's guide in the beginning of the book, it states that cursive should actually be taught before manuscript handwriting.  This really intrigued me. It stated that cursive is less fine-motor intensive.  It is a fluid motion that comes more naturally.  That make a lot of sense.  Wish I would have known this years ago when my boys were first learning to write!  :-)

The book is recommended for those 7 years old +, but there are instructions on how to adapt it for younger children, as well.  You can view a sample of the book here and see additional resources that they have available here.
