In my life/homeschool this week: On Monday, Kiddo #4 had her sewing class. She made an outfit for her beloved "Pigie." It is so darn cute! Her skills never cease to amaze me. :-)
On Monday, we also dove a bit more into an "interest-led" educational approach. I bought 4 pieces of posterboard and told the kiddos that they could research any topic they wished, but they were to illustrate and describe it on their posters. It was no surprise what each child picked, but they truly loved doing the project (which was the whole point!) :-)
At the time of these photos, the posters were still not completely finished (my printer needed more toner, lol!), but Kiddo #4 chose pigs
Kiddo #2 chose the football playoffs of several years ago
Kiddo #3 chose the circus

Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty uneventful school days, with the kiddos finishing their posters and working on their subjects such as Algebra and Chemistry. Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We do a lot of special activities to mark the season and to prepare ourselves for Easter. I will devote a post to this on Monday. I hope you enjoy it.
Thursday was Valentine's Day. Kiddo #4 and I were surprised with a special treat from my hubby-- we each got roses and chocolate! :-) Kiddos #1 and 3 also made chocolate strawberries and my dad gave me some chocolate covered pretzels (yummy!). Kiddo #4 made her now legendary "Cocoa Crackles" (you can see the recipe here from Try a New Recipe Tuesday" since her was her Pigie's 2nd birthday. :-)
My husband took the children and I out to dinner and surprised us with some news. It is definitely bittersweet. This is something that he has done since he was 17 years old and for all but about a year and a half of our marriage. I was 17 when I met my "soldier boy," who was home on leave from Germany, so it will definitely take some getting used to. I am so enormously proud of him. It is no surprise that the troops under his leadership are devastated at the news. Of course, I won't miss the long periods of time that we weren't with him, or the year he was at war, or the 12 of 14 Father's Days that he wasn't able to share with the kids, but there is a pride, identity, strength and fortitude that comes with being a military wife and family....I well up again as I type this.
Since I am so late getting this out, I am able to share that hubby and I took the kids to the circus on Friday for a Valentine's Day gift. It was, by far, the best circus performance we have ever attended. We were mesmerized the whole time. Of course, Kiddo #3 was thrilled with the elephants. :-)
The circus programs came with clown glasses, lol!
We took the kids to a downtown diner for lunch. It was a great day. :-)
I hope your week went well. Have a great weekend! :-)

What a fun week! Thank you to your husband and family for his many years of service!
I love her pig! I still have to my daughters sewing machine set up so we can start sewing. It looks like you had a fun week. I completely understand with being too busy to blog. If only there were more hours in the day.
God Bless,Monique
Oh Lisa I know it was bittersweet. But how lovely that he will be home will you all and not have to leave. Your daughter's sewing skills are just awesome. I love the 'interest led' project. That is the kind of thing we do around here. Your Valentine's day looks awesome. Yummy food and surprises! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks for visiting me - love your week and your hubby's service! You have a wonderful family. Keep up all the great work.
Wow! I bet that was big news for your family! I'm sure it will be quite an adjustment--but a wonderful one!
A beautiful week, Lisa! Love your day of interest led learning:) I am happier when I don't try to blog every day...it gives me more time to enjoy my family. Please thank your husband for his service to us all, and thank you for your sacrifice as well...I know it can't have been easy. Many blessings ahead I hope!

I love Kiddo #4's outfit that she sewed!! Good for her!!
We are working on posters of topics of our choice, too!!
Seems like a very fun week! Sometimes I go weeks without posting on my blog because I just can't seem to find the time ~ finding time can definitely be a challenge. But I think all us mom bloggers understand ;)

I love your interest led poster board idea. I may have to try that myself. Good luck on your new adventure as a post military family!
