TOS Review- Egglo Entertainment

Today I am reviewing the following products from Egglo Entertainment:

• Egglo Glow in the Dark Eggs
• "The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure" book
• The Egg-cellent Adventure Curriculum (a downloadable guide to give you ideas on how to implement the program with your church or youth group)
• Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls
• Egglo Bible Verse Stickers

This was such a fun and meaningful review to do!

What is this all about?  It is an Easter-themed product to teach in a real and tangible way that Christ is the Light of the World.  The book (The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure) is an engaging read.  Even my teenagers were interested in finding out what was going on.  I don't want to give anything away, but I will tell you that the children in the book begin an amazing adventure in their attic on Holy Saturday that brings them to many places.  They are learning a real lesson about Easter Sunday and Jesus' sacrifice.  They are on a treasure hunt, one they will never forget.  Neither will their readers.  I heard my daughter quoting a lesson she learned from the book later in the day.  Of course, I was thrilled!

After reading the story, I let the kiddos go downstairs into the basement where I had hid the Glow in the Dark Egglo Eggs.  I had already charged the eggs in the sunlight before the kiddos woke up and stuffed them each with a Scripture scroll (in and of themselves, they are wonderful and appropriate Scripture quotes for the Lenten/Easter season, but they really correlate with the story in the book, as well) and a Bible verse sticker.  This was our very first Easter egg hunt of the season! (and a welcomed one with this unending winter we have been having)  The kiddos have asked if we can do this again on Holy Saturday evening.  What a great idea!

After the eggs were all gathered, they took them upstairs, opened them and shared some of the verses.

They included:

"Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day." based on 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

"Jesus said, 'Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life." based on John 8:12

"Jesus said 'I am with you always" based on Matthew 28:20.

When then discussed each verse, what it was speaking to our heart and how it related to Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice for us.

The book and egg hunt can be used in so many capacities.  The curriculum gives many different activity suggestions for youth groups and churches.  Since we were doing it in a home/homeschool setting, we used the materials in the way I described above: reading the book, having the egg hunt, and then discussing what we had learned from the story, the hunt and the verses and stickers in each egg.

I may even add some additional verses into the eggs when we do the hunt on Holy Saturday.  There are so many that refer to Christ as the Light of the World.

The recommended age for the products is 4-13, however it can easily be adapted for any age.

My Week in Review #27

My Week in Review/Weekly Wrap-up/THMJ- March 6

What a whirlwind.  I cannot believe another week is coming to an end!

The highlights of our week include:

bowling

a ceramics program where the kids got to actually start with a block of clay and use their imaginations to make wonderful spring and Easter-themed pieces:

I can't wait to see the pieces after they are fired!  I will be sure to take pics!

National Pancake Day at IHOP (for free pancakes and to support the Children's Miracle Network) (sorry if these images are a little fuzzy.  I forgot my camera and used my phone)

and a snowstorm!!!!  I know, it has been colder than Alaska here in PA and we have gotten countless ice storms and "little" nuisance amounts of snow, but we finally got a large amount of accumulating snow that the kids could actually play in.  Ok, now that they got their "big" snow, I am officially ready for spring!  

(that is Kiddo #4 doing a cartwheel in the snow!  So much more snow over the course of the and evening.  I think we got about 8-10 inches altogether on top of what was still on the ground from the last time)

My Week in Review #26

My Week in Review/Weekly Wrap-up/THMJ- 2/27

Another COLD week has gone by here in PA.  It is actually colder here than in Anchorage!

Last Friday, the kiddos again had their homeschool bowling league and continued to do really well! Kiddo #4 bowls with her beloved Pigie (as seen below)  :-)

They also worked on their Iditarod Trail Mail project.  Do you participate in it?  Your child's project, along with their photo, if you include it, will be carried by a musher on the trail!  Isn't that cool?  We will be tracking our musher and look forward to receiving our project back signed by him/her along with their standing in the race, time, etc.  Below is the picture that was on our project page.  I received notification today that our project was received.  The race is on March 7th and we can't wait!

Kiddos 1 and 2 had their online classes and Kiddos 3 and 4 learned about percents.

We had some fun family game night games and more snow

and one of the best things about homeschooling is that a Kiddo can decide he wants to bbq some dogs or that she wants to make a beautiful cake (I will do my best to get her recipe typed up for next week's Try a New Recipe Tuesday)

On Thursday, we attended the 2nd half of the herb program.  Remember last week when they made their own herb baskets?

Well, today was amazing.  The kids all made an entire meal-- from appetizers to a main course and then got to sit down and enjoy their fare.  They made two different types of dip (one to be served with carrots and one with crackers), salsa, chicken soup, lemon chicken, roasted cauliflower and herbed pita crips.  Oh, yes, and lemon mint tea.  Wow.  They chopped every herb, tomato and pepper.  They stirred and chopped and diced.  What an incredible program.  They had so much fun and learned quite a bit.  I am looking forward to even more programs there.

And, as Lent progresses, our Kind Words Cross is getting more lillies and we have decided to make our own Lenten candles.  Advent has candles, so the Kiddos thought that we could light a candle for every week of Lent.  I like the idea.  :-)

TOS Review- IndoctriNation

Today I am reviewing IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America by Great Commission Films.

Sobering, eye-opening, educational, provocative.....

This documentary hit home for me.  I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education and taught in a "blue ribbon" public school before having my children.

Although discouraged then by the "system" and promising myself that my future children would never step within those walls, I learned so much from watching this program that college and my many years teaching never taught me.

Did you know that the structure of our current school systems today are based upon the Prussian Model (under Nazi control) and was originally proposed by Karl Marx?

The first mandatory public schools in this country were in the 1800s.  Their purpose was to train huge numbers of children as quickly as possible for factory work.  Quality was not an issue.  They produced a large number of students with the minimum amount of knowledge to get by.  Has much even changed?

The film was made by Scottish filmmaker Colin Gunn.  In it, he interviews everyone from scientists to pastors, teachers to superintendents and he got an earful about the American school system.  There were students who candidly told him that even in the "best" of schools, they were exposed to drugs, violence, alcohol, sex and more at impressionable young ages.  Their parents have entrusted their safety and welfare to a system that does not provide it in so many ways.  Sad and very scary indeed. Many expressed being scared on a daily basis and how dangerous bullying has become.  There is an emotional plea from the father of a Columbine victim that profoundly touched me.  In addition, there are the issues that concern many Christian parents-- removal of even the mention of God, prayer, and Bible clubs from schools.  And let us not forget about the microphones being turned off during graduation speeches because Jesus was thanked.

Also mentioned is the pressure in schools (I witnessed this first hand) to medicate children without a true diagnosis to the point  of them being practically sedated.  Kids are not "good" unless they sit perfectly still for hours on end, not moving, not speaking, not thinking.  Other than being told what to learn and how to learn it, no matter their own individual learning style, interests or abilities.

I learned in college and in my own classrooms over the years that real learning takes place when a student sees, hears and DOES.  Hands-on, tactile learning stimulates parts of the brain that promote retention of material.  Sitting in a zombie-state for hours on end is not only unnatural, it is not conducive to real learning.  What kind of learning is taking place in the schools today?  Is the history revised according to political correctness or whatever tides the winds will bring?  Being told what to learn and how to learn and teaching to a test strips children of innovation, creativity and imagination.

These are many of the reasons why some of the best and brightest in this country and abroad (Gates, Jobs, Zuckenberg, even Einstein and Churchill) had not done well in educational settings.  Most of them even dropped out.

Do not forget the controversial Common Core issue, where classic literature (anything written before the 1900s) was for all intents and purposes removed and more "modern" even grossly explicit and inappropriate material substituted in its place.  Let us not even begin to address the mathematics under Common Core.  It boggles the logical mind.  Truly.  I have seen it.

This documentary is well worth your $19.95 and 102 minutes.  You will be changed.  You will be outraged.  You will be empowered.
