Today I am reviewing the
Teacher Edition and Student Workbook from
Victus Study System.
Students today are told to study, but do they really know what they means or how to do it? They really are never taught
how to study. Everyone learns differently, so shouldn't they also study differently?
The Victus Study System helps a student develop his/her own unique study skills and achieve their own individual goals. Victus takes into consideration the student's own learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) and are taught how to also apply these new skills to their lives in areas of faith and finances.
What are these different styles? Here are some of them (you can be one or a combination of the following):
- Visual Learners: Individuals who fall into this category through what they are able to see with their own eyes. Visual learners are those students who jockey for the positions in the front of the class, must have front row theater seats and love to be right up front for sporting events in order to obtain the best view. Visual learners have a tendency to describe everything that they see in terms of appearances. These learners love visual aids such as photos, diagrams, maps and graphs.
- Auditory Learners: Auditory learners are very good listeners. They tend to absorb information in a more efficient manner through sounds, music, discussions, teachings, etc. These individuals will be more likely to record lectures so they can replay them at a later time for study purposes. Auditory learners appreciate books on tape and may find that reading aloud will help them to retain information. Auditory learners tend to do better on oral presentations and reports, rather than written assignements.
- Kinesthetic Learners: Kinesthetic Learners are tactile learners. This means they learn best through moving, doing, acting out or touching. Projects that are hands-on in nature are best for these learners. They tend to become frustrated when they must sit for long periods of time. They enjoy conducting experiments, exploring and performing tasks.
It is important to know that there is no right or wrong learning style. Knowing your learning style is not meant to limit you, but to expand you- by helping you to work, learn and live more efficiently.
As part of the program, my son had to set goals for himself and make plans on how to achieve them. There were charts and questionnaires. He developed short-term, intermediate and long-term goals. He had to work on time-management and organization (a GOOD one for teenage boys, lol), taking notes and test-taking (also extremely helpful and practical) He worked on 2 lessons a day for a week.
The program is most appropriate for students in 5th through 12th grades, but with more parent/teacher involvement, it could be used by younger students, as well.
