Try a New Recipe Tuesday- October 16

It's Tuesday again and time for "Try a New Recipe Tuesday!"  :-)


This week, I am sharing my chocolate chip pound cake recipe.  It is SO yummy and is a big hit in our house.  :-)


Chocolate  Chip Pound Cake

1 cup butter (2 sticks) softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla (I use a bit more)
3 cups flour
½ tsp. baking powder
½ baking soda
¾ cup milk
1 cup chocolate chips


Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Grease and flour bundt pan or spray with baking spray containing flour.  In large mixing bowl, beat butter with sugar until light and fluffy.  Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.  Add vanilla.
Mix flour, baking powder and baking soda together.  Add to butter mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour.  Be sure to beat until the flour totally disappears before adding milk and vice versa.  Fold in 1 cup chocolate chips.

Bake for 65 minutes or until lightly brown and toothpick comes clean out of the center.

Make Life Meaningful Monday- October 15


It was indeed a meaningful weekend with much to be thankful for.  I got to see my daughter working with my dad in making her Hershey Kiss Halloween costume.








We celebrated my uncle's 70th birthday with a lovely dinner.  I made pizzelles for the occasion.
(with a spectator other than my kids, lol!)




Kiddo #1 got to work flight line security at an air show with his Civil Air Patrol unit.  He really enjoyed it.  What a thrill for those kids!  :-)

Church being meaningful goes without saying, of course.

And then there are moments like this, that as a homeschooling mom, make me want to dance for joy.




Kiddo #2 was not only reading, which I love, but was playing a "Magic Tree House" game with his younger siblings.  They were "going back in time" and reenacting different historical events from the books!  How cool is that?  :-)

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up October 12

Another week come and gone!  It was a good week, though, even though I do feel like I'm in a whirlwind.
 :-)

In my life/homeschool this week: The day started early with Kiddo #1's Chemistry class.  Did I mention that he doesn't like it being so early on a Monday?  lol.  ;-)   Kiddo #3 hurt his finger on Sunday afternoon.  Since it was still pretty discolored and swollen on Monday, hubby (he was off from work for the holiday) and I took him for x-rays.  No fractures, thank God, just some bad bruising that they said could take a couple of weeks to completely heal.  We'll take that, for sure!   :-)  We also took Kiddo #4 to a fabric store.  She wants to make her own costume this year.  She has recruited my dad to help her. (he used to make my costumes when I was a kid)  She is going to be a Hershey Kiss, so we found the perfect silver, shiny material for the task.  I know she will really enjoy being able to make her own costume.  She did also have sewing class on Monday and continued working on her mini dolphin pillow-pet.  She is really so talented!

My post on Monday was about a wonderful trip we went on last Friday to historic Pottsgrove Manor.  You can read it and see lots more fun photos here.



On Tuesday, the kiddos got much work done and had their Italian lesson in the afternoon.  They are really enjoying their Italian class and are doing so well with it!  It makes such a difference when a teacher makes it fun and hands-on.  They got to draw and label pictures in Italian of the seasons and are making calendars with the months and days of the week.  I posted some photos of our "ordinary" day here.  :-)



My weekly recipe linkup was also on Tuesday.  I shared my homemade laundry detergent recipe.  You can see it, and all of the other recipes that were shared here.

On Wednesday, after Kiddo #1 and 2's online class, we had an incredible field trip to Valley Forge National Park.  They host a homeschool day twice a year and I am so glad that the weather cleared up enough for us to attend.  What an experience!  I remember vaguely visiting there as a child, but nothing like this with hands-on stations.  We also got to walk into Washington's headquarters.  It truly gives you a new respect for the immense sacrifices that were made for our freedom and how much we need to cherish what was earned for us through that sacrifice.  I posted some wonderful photos here.




Thursday was a good day getting caught up on some work.  Here is a photo of Kiddo #3 putting together a puzzle from his Apologia Zoology book.  We had classes at church in the late afternoon and Kiddo #1 had his Civil Air Patrol meeting.  He is looking forward to being part of the Flight line security for an air show this weekend!  :-)



Friday will be a quiet day with some school work, Halloween costume making and perhaps some baking, as well.  I hope everyone has a great weekend!

What I'm reading: continuing with a two online Bible studies.  I can barely keep up with them.  Life has been a bit of a whirlwind, lol!  :-)

What I'm praying for: our nation, our military, those who are unemployed, sick or suffering, my family....

Thankful Thursday- October 11

As always, I look forward to Thursdays, to reflect upon the many blessings I have been given.  After visiting Valley Forge National Historical Park yesterday, I am grateful for wonderful homeschool programs like that (for no cost!), but more importantly, I cherish all the more the freedoms we have and the immense magnitude of sacrifice made for us to have those freedoms.

 There were many stations for the kids to visit including clothing,

 food rations, and "medicine" (I think the kids were too shocked by the saws and such to take a photo of that station)

 we got to climb inside the cabins that had to house 12-15 men.  This was after enduring almost 2 months of a brutal winter in tents.  It took that amount of time for all of the cabins to be constructed.  They arrived in Valley Forge in December.  The cabins were finished by mid-January.  They stayed in Valley Forge until June.  From December 1777 to June 1778, 2000 men died from disease, cold, hunger, etc, but somehow they emerged a more efficient, better trained, determined fighting force that continued on for 5 more years to victory.

Costumed interpreters were everywhere and were friendly and very informative.  This man was portraying a farmer who owned some of the land that the Army used during their encampment.



 This was Washington's headquarters.  It is not a replica or reconstruction.  It is the real deal.  This home actually belonged to a son of the man whose home we visited for a program last week.  Isn't that cool?  I didn't know that.  Washington rented the house for the duration of his stay.

 Most of the items inside are authentic and it was quite awe-inspiring to be there and see it all.

These were the cabins where Washington's guard were housed.  Their unit became what we know today as the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery.  I didn't know that, either.


Here are the 5 of us in front of a statue that was made to thank Washington for his service at the end of the war.  There is so much significance in the sculpture-- Washington is in his military uniform, but holding his civilian walking stick, not his sword.  He is leaning on his farming plowshare and there are 13 rods all together, symbolizing the 13 then unified states.

An amazing, fun and educational day with my children that gave us much to think about and be thankful for.

Wordless Wednesday- October 10

This WW, there aren't fancy field trip pictures or those from a vacation like in previous weeks. Tuesday (yesterday) was a cool, damp fall day that saw us doing our "ordinary" routine at home.  We enjoyed our quiet, productive day.  We will be at Valley Forge National Historical park today (Wednesday) for their bi-annual homeschool day and are looking forward to it, but these photos are of our "regular" Tuesday that consisted of math, religion, science, history, handwriting and Italian.  Sometimes, the "ordinary" can be beautiful, too!  And, there was our chef "helper" at dinner time, which was just too cute!  :-)  The Valley Forge pics will hopefully be up tomorrow.

Try a New Recipe Tuesday- October 9

It's that time again!  :-)  I really look forward each week to the recipes that are shared and enjoy trying them with my family.


This week, for the first time, I am not sharing a food recipe, but a homemaking recipe.  I make my own powder laundry detergent.  Not only is it all-natural, but the cost is SO far less than what it costs to buy commercial detergent and it cleans really well!

I use a scent-free soap as a base because of allergies/asthma in my family, but others have made it very successfully with fels-naptha soap and enjoy the pleasant scent.  I have been using Ivory pure and simple, but  am going to try Dr. Bronner's organic unscented soap next.  I have four active children and a husband that works outside and it has worked really, really well in making our clothes clean.  :-)  Believe it or not, you have to use only one tablespoon for a regular load and two tablespoons for a heavily soiled load.  That's it.  It comes out to about 4 cents a load.  That is much less than the commercially sold brands.



one bar of soap (like I mentioned, I have used Ivory pure and simple, but many use Felt-naptha laundry soap, Dr. Bronner's, etc.)

1/2 cup Borax 20 Mule Team

1/2 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

1/4 cup free and clear Oxi-Clean (optional)

Finely grate bar of soap.  Add other ingredients.  Stir vigorously or put lid on container and shake.  Some people have put it in a food processor.  I have not had to do that.  Stirring/shaking has done the trick.  :-)

Make Life Meaningful Monday- October 8

The kiddos and I went on a wonderful field trip on Friday afternoon.  Pottsgrove Manor is a 1752 mansion, built for John Potts, ironmaster and founder of Pottstown, PA.  They held their annual Homeschool Day and we were so glad to be a part of it.

We are so very blessed to live in an area so rich in history and that these establishments offer such engaging hands-on programs for little or no cost.




There were numerous stations set up around the property.  These included doing "laundry" and pumping the water necessary for the task.



There were spinning wheels going with wool from the sheep and angora from the rabbits.


There was butter to be churned and baking of cookies to be done.  :-)



Kiddo #1 enjoyed making a tin lantern and everyone thought candle dipping was awesome.







I had never been to Pottsgrove Manor before, so it was a new and wonderful learning experience for me, as well.  There were so many stations that we didn't even get a chance to visit, so I know now for next year to get there even earlier.  :-)
