It was touching to see the kiddos wish each one goodbye as they flew away. Kiddo #4 had tears in her eyes, but understood that she wanted them to have a bit of freedom before they died in only a couple of weeks, but she made sure to tell them how much she would miss them and how happy they made her. Ok, now I'm tearing up! :-)
One butterfly, as if on cue, to say goodbye and thank you, paused long enough on the fence to open its wings to us before flying away.
We also were so blessed to have #9 emerge right before our eyes as we were outside. What a gift to witness it!
This has been a wonderful experience in so many ways!

You got to see the butterfly emerge from the chrysalis? How wonderful! I wanted to see that, but ours emerged while we weren't looking! Terrific photographs - I'm most impressed by your ability to capture those shots before they took flight. What a sweet post - thank you for sharing!

Ah, the butterflies....we did a lapbook the year before last when we hatched ours. We didn't hatch anything this year. Well, we tried. We found a cat...and he went in his chrys....and then...something hatched, but it wasn't a butterfly....it was very odd and we never had a chance to research it! Beautiful photos! Thank you for sharing!

Where do you collect the caterpillars? I'd like to do this during the year....how fun!

@Nicole, we purchased the kit at the local parent/teacher store and then sent in the coupon for the caterpillars. They arrived a few weeks later. They come complete with all of the food they will need and do all of the work, lol! :-)
