Veterans' Day 2013

As the wife of a retired soldier who served for over 24 years and fought in 2 wars, this day has significant meaning for me.  In fact, even as a young person, this day had meaning, for I always had great respect for those who have served our nation.  Their courage and sacrifice must always be remembered, not just on two days a year.

I have shared this poem on my blog before, but is is well worth repeating.  It will touch your heart and soul.  Please say a prayer for your service members today, and thank a vet.  It will mean the world to them!

THE FINAL INSPECTION - AUTHOR UNKNOWN

The Soldier stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass..

Step forward now, Soldier,

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,

No, Lord, I guess I ain't.

Because those of us who carry guns,

Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,

And at times my talk was tough.

And sometimes I've been violent,

Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime,

When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at times I shook with fear..

And sometimes, God, forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,

Among the people here.

They never wanted me around,

Except to calm their fears

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,

Where the saints had often trod.

As the Soldier waited quietly,

For the judgment of his God.

Step forward now, you Soldier,

You've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,

You've done your time in Hell.'

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up November 9

Another week gone!  Just don't know where the time is going.  :-)

It has been another busy, fun and productive week for the 4 Kiddos.

Last Saturday, we had our monthly 4H meeting.  My children are really just loving everything about 4H.  I am so glad!  It is hands-on, educational and fun.  After the meeting, we had the first of three cooking classes. It is being taught by a dear friend (who told us about 4H!), which makes it all the better.

The kids made meat and vegetarian chili as well as coffee cake.  It was a productive and delicious afternoon!

The rest of the week consisted of schoolwork- older Kiddos working hard on their Algebra II and younger Kiddos starting a new Chemistry and Physics book.  They are just loving the fun, hands-on experiments.  A review is coming soon.  :-)  Kiddo #4 made us brownies and we raked up leaves, enjoying the beautiful fall weather.  They are calling for more than a foot of snow this coming week, so I'm glad we enjoyed the mild weather when we did!

On Friday (I will post lots more pics and a post describing all about it), we went on a field trip to a place called the Peter Wentz Farmstead.  What an amazing gem practically in our own backyard!  The house was built in the mid 1700s and served as Washington's headquarters during the Battle of Germantown.  How awesome is that!  Ok, I admit that I had goosebumps standing in the room where Washington stayed.  It is truly amazing living in this area of the country.  So much history!

What we are looking forward to:
4H Teen activities on Saturday
Veterans' Day- come back to see the post I will share.  It will touch your heart!

I love fall in Pennsylvania.  The colors are so magnificent.  Sometimes photos don't even seem able to do them justice.
