Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up October 5

Fridays seem to be getting here more quickly every week.  Do you find that, as well?  :-)

In my life/homeschool this week: Monday and Tuesday were our last two days in Bethany Beach.  On Monday we visited Assateague Island and were able to see some of the wild horses!  What an amazing experience.  I posted lots more pictures of them here.

On Tuesday, on our way home, we visited the Air Mobility Museum at the Dover Air Force Base.  It is the only museum in the country that is dedicated to airlift and refueling history.

We got to see planes including Air Force Two and climb aboard a C-47 Skytrain that dropped paratroopers on D-Day.  Walking through that plane gave me the goosebumps, knowing what those men endured in order to help free Europe on that infamous day in June of 1944.

We also got to climb up into a mock air traffic control tower.

I also posted my weekly recipe linkup.  I shared my homemade oreo cookies recipe.  Lots of other good recipes were shared, as well.  You can see them all here.

On Wednesday, we returned home to another field trip, this time to Citizens Bank Park, the home field of our Philadelphia Phillies.  What an awesome trip!  We got to go behind the scenes and see the locker room, dugout, press room, etc.  I wrote all about it here.

Thursday was a back to the grind day, with school work all around and classes at church in the evening.

What I'm praying for: our nation, our military, our freedom of religion and conscience, those who are unemployed, sick and suffering, my family, the list goes on......

What I'm reading: trying desperately to catch up on my reading for my various book clubs all going on at once!

A photo or quote to share:

The harvest moon this past week.  Wasn't it beautiful?

P.S.  I shared two science printables for Print-a-Palooza on Thursday.  One was bear flashcards and the other was my Bird Bingo.  Feel free to print them out for your children.  You can find them here.

Print-a-Palooza October 4th- Science

I hope everyone is enjoying all of the free printables at Print-a-Palooza!  It has been a wonderful resource!

Today I am sharing my Bear matching game

(for some reason, if the google doc doesn't look like it uploaded properly, just let me know and I'll email the file to you personally!)  It is a fun game that I made for my kids and they really enjoyed it with their Apologia Zoology course.  :-)
and our Bird Bingo Game, which my kiddos just love!

I made several bingo cards with the pictures scrambled in different places

Hope you enjoy the printables!

Thankful Thursday- October 4

I wasn't able to post last Thursday since we were leaving for Bethany Beach and I really missed doing it.  It is wonderful to be able to focus, no matter what, on the things for which we are thankful.  There are always so many, if we just take the time to see them.  They may seem small or inconsequential to others, but it is sometimes the smallest of gifts that are the most precious.

I am certainly thankful for a wonderful long weekend away with my family.  You can see some random shots from Bethany here and even the wild horses of Assateague in a post here.

I am also thankful for a wonderful field trip opportunity yesterday (Wednesday).  My husband, children and I participated in a homeschool tour of Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.  What a fun event!  I think the adults enjoyed it just as much as the kids. :-) We got to see the locker rooms, swing the players' bats, "give" a press conference, sit in the broadcasting booth, dugout and more.  We enjoyed a nice lunch afterwards.  It was a great end to our little vacation as we will all be back to the grind on Thursday.

Wordless Wednesday- October 3

On Monday, we visited Assateague Island.  I have never been there before and was so excited about just how close it was to where we were staying in Bethany Beach.

The word magnificent barely does it justice.  It is a beautiful island, peaceful and scenic.  Part beach, part marsh, part forest.  And, of course, there are the wild horses!  We went on a hike on a trail, drove around many others, walked onto the beach and the marsh all in search of them.  And find them, finally, we did! (for a while we were thinking we weren't going to see any!)  We can't wait to visit next year, when we will give the visit more time (and pack lunch and bug spray, lol!)  :-)

Try a New Recipe Tuesday- October 2

It's Tuesday again!  I wasn't able to try any of your wonderful recipes this past week as we have been in Bethany Beach (and visited Asssateague Island today to see the wild horses!), but I look forward to doing so soon.  I couldn't not have this wonderful linkup, so on our last night here in Delaware, here goes....  :-)

Luckilly, I have many of my recipes on my computer, so even when away from home, I can share some with you.

This recipe is for my homemade oreo cookies.  They are a big hit with my kids.

Ingredients
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter
1 3/4 cup sugar (divided- save 1/2 cup to roll cookies in)
2 eggs
2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
vanilla frosting (I make my own)
1/2 cup sprinkles (optional)

Combine flour, cocoa, and baking soda
Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat, cool slightly.  Add 1 1/4 cups sugar, whisk until smooth.  Whisk in eggs one at a time until blended.  Stir in vanilla until smooth.  Stir in flour mixture just until combined.  Wrap dough in plastic wrap; refrigerate 2 hours.  Preheat over to 350.  Grease cookie sheets.  Shape dough into 1 inch balls.  Place remaining 1/2 cup sugar in shallow bowl , roll balls in sugar.  Place 1 1/2 inches apart on cookie sheet.  Bake 12 minutes or until cookies feel set to the touch.  Let cookies stand on cookie sheet 5 minutes.  Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.  Spread frosting over the side of one cookie and then push another together to it, letting some squeeze out of the side.  Roll into sprinkles, if desired.  Enjoy!  :-))))

Make Life Meaningful Monday- October 1

We are away for a long weekend in Bethany Beach, DE.  My oldest son and my husband attend the NASCAR race every year and we all get some time for sightseeing, fun and relaxation.

We stay on a military base here in town that has wonderful vacation accomodations for military and DoD families.  I am very grateful for such reasonably priced opportunities for our family and am happy that the military offers these to its members and their families who so deserve it because of their sacrifice and commitment.

This weekend so far has seen us on base enjoying the private dock, beach and track,

"working out" in the fitness center,

playing mini golf,

worshipping in a beautiful church,

enjoying the beautiful weather on the "real" beach and in the ocean,

bowling,

playing in an arcade and just plain having fun together.

(I promise to post some of Hubby and Kiddo #1's NASCAR pics soon!)  We are here until Tuesday and are looking forward to more fun.  :-)
