The Kelly Family Tragedy

A few days ago, the blogger world was rocked with news of the death of Mandy Kelly, her husband and two of their children in a tragic house fire.

I never met Mandy personally, but read her blog and we were members of various homeschooling and/or blogging groups on Facebook.

A young family (the youngest child to perish was only 10 months old-- her readers followed their adoption journey on her blog.) taken too soon would touch anyone, whether or not they knew the family.  Those who knew the family personally have shared so many stories of their kindness, love, faithfulness and involvement in their church.  I was honored to have participated in the blogging adoption fundraiser 3 years ago to help them bring their precious baby boy home.

I cannot help but remember words that I heard at a funeral recently-- another untimely death- one of a 33 year old man.  We were told "we shouldn't be here.....but, where else would we be?"  It seems wrong to us to have to mourn those who are so young, who have so much life yet to live, yet where else would we be in a time of sorrow or confusion, but in the house of the Lord, as we need His comfort and strength.  Very true and powerful words.

This whole tragedy and the pictures bring back horrible memories for me, having survived the loss of our home and possessions to a horrible fire 11 months ago.

I still smell that "smell," my palms still sweat at the sound of a fire engine or the volunteer firefighter siren.  Some nights, I lay awake, unable to close my eyes because I still see the flames.  It has lessened over the course of the last year, and I know, that as time goes on, it will fade even more, but I know for sure I will never forget.  We are still not back in our home and when I feel like complaining about our current living situation or the time it is taking, I seem to be faced with a story of a tragedy such as Mandy's or another one on the news and I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

I do not know why my family was spared that day in April last year, but I am profoundly grateful and do not take that lightly.  I have been told by many people that the Lord has great plans for us and I have tried to be open to whatever He has in store.  To say that our lives have changed would be the understatement of the year, not just physically and emotionally, but spiritually, as well.  We have become so much closer as a family and cherish each other even more.  We enjoy each other more than we did before and the little "stuff" just doesn't seem to bother us as much anymore.  When you literally have looked into the flames consuming your home, you just don't sweat the small things.  Two events in my life have taught me that-- my husband's year in Iraq and the fire.  When you are faced with the possibility of life and death, you are grateful for everything, even the little daily mishaps of life that may have upset you in the past.

Life is too precious and too short.  Be sure to hug all of your loved ones tonight as we all do not know what tomorrow will bring.  I know I will.

Rest in Peace, Kelly family.

The blogs below are also publishing tributes to Mandy and her family.  We are also all linked up with Laura at Awe Filled Homemaker.

My Week in Review/ Weekly Wrap-up/THMJ- 9/19

What a great and adventure filled week here at the Home to 4 Kiddos!  :-)

The kiddos have been working hard on their schoolwork/classes, but of course, there has to be some fun hands-on activities in there like mummifying apples.  You can't study the Ancients without doing some fun experiment regarding mummification!  :-)  We will let you know in the next few days how our "mummies" turned out.  :-)

On Thursday, my birthday, my hubby made me a yummy breakfast and then we headed with some dear friends to the Sight and Sounds Theater in Lancaster, PA too see Joseph. (they were offering an extremely generous homeschool discount and my friend gave me my ticket as a birthday present!!!)  What an amazing production.  Wow!  And, to top it off, one of my friends made me cupcakes and I got serenaded with "Happy Birthday" right there at a bench on the grounds of the theater.  :-)

My parents made me a delicious birthday dinner, so we headed there upon returning from the show for some yummy eats and some Thursday night football.

On Friday, we again trekked up to Lancaster County (I just LOVE it there!) to the annual Cherry Crest Adventure Farm's homeschool days.  If you have never been able to visit Cherry Crest, I strongly encourage you to take the time and do it.  There are over 50 hands-on fun activities for kids as well as a 5-acre corn maze.  The maze has all kinds of fun surprises inside including a zipline, sliding board and even a cafe, water stations and port-a-potties!  It is a family-centered and wholesome place; one that I am pleased that my children ask to visit every year.  We were glad that some good friends got to join us.  It was so much fun!

My Week in Review/ Weekly Wrap-Up/ THMJ

Last weekend, our family attended retreat with our church.  The kiddos look forward to family retreat every year.  It is a wonderful time for faith, friends and fellowship.

On Friday, the kiddos painted (and Kiddo #1 carved) their pumpkins.  It is always a fun activity to do together.  :-)

After pumpkins, Kiddo #4 made all of us pumpkin shaped cookies.  I roasted some pumpkin seeds (recipe coming up soon!) and the kids got dressed to go out.

On Saturday, we had a 4-H meeting that was quite busy.  The kids did a first-aid project as well as the beginning of an apple project that included taste-testing apples and enjoying caramel apple dip.  The kids also made Christmas cards for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan and collected food and goodies for a care package.  It is wonderful to see the kids enthusiastically participating in service projects like that!  :-)

On my blog this past week:

Thankful Thursday- April 25

It is Thursday again and a time for us all to reflect on the many blessings we have.  On this day, I am thankful for

my mom having a wonderful birthday yesterday

my children being able to pursue their own interests whether that be making sports power points, tracking airplanes, or perler beads.  :-)

my almost 15 year old son who asked to go to the store today to buy the supplies to make his sister a balance beam for her dolls.  The dolls "want" to learn gymnastics.  ;-)

What are the blessings you have been bestowed this day?

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-Up March 15

March just began and it is already half over!

In my life/homeschool this week:

Sunday, after Church, we had beautiful weather for outdoor fun and yard work with my hubby.

Monday was a good day getting back to the books after a fun weekend that had both snow and spring (that you can read about and see here).  Kiddo #4 had her sewing class.  She is making herself a skirt to wear on Easter Sunday!  :-)  We also went to the local garden center and bought our supplies to get started with our seeds.

On Tuesday, that is exactly what we did.  Our vegetables and flowers all were planted with much care in their little biodegradable pots.  You can see many more pics here.

The Kiddos have been looking forward to this for some time!  It is a wonderful process to see, literally, the fruits of their labor grow and develop before their eyes; and to be able to either appreciate the beauty of the flowers or eat of their "harvest."  :-)

I also posted my weekly recipe linkup that has grown so much.  I am very appreciative for all of the support and participation.  Over 60 recipes were shared again this week.  I shared our homemade donuts (yummy!)  If you missed it, or would like to check out all of the recipes, you can click here.

Wednesday began as an ordinary day, but then turned into something very special for us, as we got to witness something truly wonderful-- the white smoke billowing from the roof of the magnificent Sistine Chapel signalling the election of the 266th successor of St. Peter.  It was something so exciting to experience with my children, who were jumping up and down along with me at the news and then glued to the coverage to meet Pope Francis along with the world.  What a good, holy and humble man, one who truly strives to be Christ-like.  We are blessed indeed.

Thursday had Kiddos 1 and 2 taking their online class and Kiddos 3 and 4 playing a little matching game that I designed to teach them about how many seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks there are in a day, month, year, decade, century, etc.  This led into some math problems to delve into these even further.  What fun for them to figure out how many days or minutes they have been alive!  :-)  To get kids that enthusiastic about doing some math problems is an accomplishment in my book.  We also had our classes at church in the evening and Kiddo #1 had his Civil Air Patrol meeting.

I posted on Thursday about being grateful for many things, among them the beautiful spring-like weather of the last few days and the children getting to enjoy it.  You can see it all here.

I don't think we'll have snow again this Friday (but who knows?  March is pretty unpredictable), so we will try to go over to Church for Stations of the Cross.  It is a wonderful way for the children (and I!) to "walk along" the path of Christ on Good Friday and come to a better understanding of what He endured for our salvation.  Isn't that what Lent is all about?

Memoir Monday- February 4

I am joining again with Chris for her weekly linkup called Memoir Monday.

"A memoir is not a factual recitation of history, though history is part of the story.  It's a recollection, a musing and merging of images, dreams, reflections moments in your life's journey."-- Linda Joy Myers

I liked that she continued to distinguish between a memoir and an autobiography.  An autobiography, she asserted, requires a great deal of fact and history and usually is written toward the end of one's life.  You would have to go to the courthouse and find out birth and death dates for family members.  A memoir, by contrast, is a compilation of memories, feelings, reflections, that can be done at any time during one's life journey.

That truly is what blogging is all about, isn't it?  :-)

So here is yet another segment in my memoir.......

Yesterday, after Church, the excitement began to grow for my kiddos.  They enjoy watching the Super Bowl each year.  We don't encourage a lot of TV watching (only things of an educational nature like Discovery/Science channel, Military channel, etc. and yes, local sports.  Philadelphia, although not super lucky in the championship department, is a very dedicated and devoted sports town!)

Before the Super Bowl, we turned on the 'Puppy Bowl' on Animal Planet.  It was cute, especially the half-time show, which featured kittens, since we are cat people.  :-)

Kiddo #2 wore the t-shirt that his Pop made him;

We used our team-themed plates and napkins and homemade decorations and got ready for some fun, family time together.

For the record, we did change the channel during the halftime show.  There is no reason why my children (or we adults, for that matter) have to watch someone screaming at the top of their lungs and laying on the floor gyrating in a very suggestive manner.  So, the kids put something else on for a few minutes.  :-)

I know I was looking forward to eating Kiddo #1's football cake.  Isn't it cool?  The recipe can be found in my Try a New Recipe Tuesday from last week.

So, blackout or no blackout, good commercials or ones where we have to turn our heads, we had a fun evening of tacos, snacks, cake and family.  And it ended with watching a postgame show where all of the players and coaches, whether on the winning or losing side, were gracious, praised the other team and thanked God.  It is nice for my children, especially my boys, to see grown men act with such good character.  That is what it is all about and what makes writing my "memoirs" such a joy.

May my children look upon this in the future and remember these events with much happiness and pride.

Homeschool Mother's Journal/Weekly Wrap-up January 11

Ok, I have to admit that it is too cool that I can compose this post while riding on a train!  We are headed home as I type from our adventure in Washington, D.C.  :-)

I hope everyone had a great week.  We certainly did.

Monday was our travel day down.  We were certainly blessed that the hotel had a pool, so that is right where the kiddos found themselves on Monday evening.

On Tuesday, we were off to the National Zoo.  There aren't enough synonyms of amazing for me to adequately describe it.  It is certainly my favorite zoo and was a huge hit with my children.  I wrote all about it and shared more pictures here.

On Wednesday, we visited the Udvar-Hazy center of the National Air and Space Museum.  For those who aren't familiar, it is the second location for the Air & Space museum, since the first location on the mall was literally running out of space for very large aircraft, such as the Concorde, and most impressively, the Space Shuttle Discovery.  There is something surreal about standing under a craft that flew over 150 million miles in space.  You can see more pics and read all about it here.

Thursday found us on the National Mall visiting several of the Smithsonian buildings including the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum and the American History museum.

My children learned about the principles of flight in an hands-on way

They saw dinosaurs, sea creatures and mammals

They got to visit a learning laboratory

and followed the development of transportation in America

Ok, we're still not on the train, as I had to pack up the computer and help get everyone and all of their "stuff" off it in some semblance of order, lol.  :-)

The day ended with them getting me into the pool.  It was fun, especially the part with my 14 year old piggy-backing me!

On Friday, we headed home.  We made sure to get a photo with our driver from the week, who inspired me quite a bit and reminded me of my own roots and the struggles of my grandparents and great-grandparents when they immigrated to this country.  This gentleman, whose wife and children are still overseas, is working for the transportation company while trying to earn another graduate degree.  He has been in this country for 3 years and speaks English better than most native-born citizens.  It is his sixth language.  He was friendly, funny and personable and always had something fun or kind to say to my children.  He hopes to be able to send for his own family this year.  I pray that he does.

I hope you had a great week, as well!  :-)
