In my life/our homeschool this week: I am making a concerted effort this year to really enjoy and celebrate the season of Advent with our children. So much so that we are really going to be taking a break from the "formal" schooling and focusing on the season through Scripture, reading of different books, making crafts, prayer, thinking of others, etc.
On Monday, we had a bit of a delayed start since everyone was a bit car-lagged from our long drive home from Virginia late Sunday night. We lit our first candle on our Advent wreath, along with prayer and recitation of a Scripture verse that I hope they will have memorized by the end of the week. (for those of you who are interested, this week's verse is Matthew 1:20) We read and discussed "Merry Christmas Strega Nona" (what a lovely book! I had never read it before. It really gave us some focus on doing things for others this Advent) and we made our Advent calendar. This year's has rings for each day, as it has in the past, but at the top, we made a manger and will put in the baby Jesus on Christmas Day. We did do a bit of math review and the rest of the afternoon was music lessons (piano and guitar)
On Tuesday, we started the day in a similar fashion with our candle, Scripture and prayer. We also are doing the "Holy Heroes Advent Adventure," which the kiddos are enjoying. We made our first Jesse tree ornaments today and read "The Country Angel's Christmas." What a heartwarming story about what a difference someone can make no matter how small they are! :-) We also made cards for members of our family who live alone to let them know that we are thinking of them this Advent season. We put a Scripture verse inside that we hope will bring them some joy, hope and encouragement. We hope to continue this throughout the season.
Wednesday, found us in our new Advent routine. We continued Advent Adventure, making our Jesse tree ornaments, reading Scripture and prayer. We read "The Littlest Angel." I couldn't get through the end without crying. I am such a sap, lol. :-) It showed how the most precious gifts to God could seem small and inconsequential to others, but if they come from our hearts, He treasures them deeply. We also made another card for a relative who lives alone and today the kiddos made very special Christmas trees. They have no ornaments on them yet. As the children do a good deed for others or make a sacrifice for someone else, they will put an ornament on their tree. I hope that their trees will be beautifully decorated by Christmas!
On Thursday, we continued with what we have been doing everyday: our candle, Jesse tree ornament and study, prayer and Scripture. We also continued with our Advent Adventure. Today, we began reading "Just David." I think it is going to be an amazing story. We only read the first chapter and it had us all engrossed and wanting more. :-)
Friday, I hope to add some Nativity crafts to our afternoon and hopefully some Christmas baking, as well!
I'm cooking: This week two meals I've made include "Omelette in the crockpot" and Spaghetti Monterey in addition to more common ones like grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta and meatballs. We're hoping to get some baking in on Friday.
I'm reading: Finishing up 1 John with the Good Morning Girls Bible Study and have just started "Just David" with the kids. I have heard it is wonderful. I am looking forward to it.

I love your Bachaum quote!! I enjoyed his book quite a bit!! I also love your December focus, I may borrow that idea since we are going to ease off after next week. Focusing on that would be wonderful!!
Oh I love your Advent focus! You have inspired me to try some new things with my children this Advent season. I especially like the idea of letting relatives who live alone know they are being thought of this Christmas season. Your children are blessed to have such a thoughtful and faithful mother. I am visiting from NOBH. Thank you for linking up! Smiles -
I love your photos! I think I cry through almost every Christmas book we read each year. My kids probably think I'm off my rocker. LOL
Lisa...Oh, I know what you mean about The Littlest Angel...my kids know to get me some tissues before I even start reading it!!! Great advent activities!
What GREAT Advent activities! The kids look QUITE excited to be doing them! And the giving is just wonderful!
We are concentrating on Advent, too. You might enjoy some of the reading I listed in the links in our HMJ post.
We, too, are focusing on Advent -- such a wonderful season.

You certainly make learning for your children interesting and inspirational. Beautiful pictures. I like all the projects you are pursuing for the holiday season. Take care and God Bless.
Love the Advent Lap book.
The photo's are great and inspire me :)
Wow, you sound SO organized with your Advent! Every year I mean to be organized and have a wonderful celebration like you are, and every year it sneaks up on me. It's not like I don't KNOW it's coming... ((sigh)) Kudos to you!
I love that you are making cards! Blessings to you!!
I love that you are making cards! Blessings to you!!
Yay for taking a break from formal work and enjoying the beauty of the season! Lokks like you are off to a great start:)
love that you are taking time off 'school' to focus on Advent! i feel like i didn't really prepare well enough to do that, but we are incorporating advent activities daily and i think i may do your idea of having that as our sole focus next year!
Such great ideas for this season. I love how you are teaching your children to focus on other's feelings this time of the year & not just their own. This season is all about giving & giving of ourself & our own time towards someone else in my oppinion is one of the greatest gifts you could give.
Great books you guys are reading.
I love that picture of the kids snuggled together in front of the table. (Even if it's a "make sure everybody's in the picture" snuggle ;-)) You have a gorgeous family.
Great Advent ideas!
Hi Lisa, I'm stopping by your blog from WUH. :) You visited mine earlier today. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
I love doing Advent/Jesse Tree devotions/studies this time of year! This is only our second year doing anything related to Advent. It is such a nice break from the normal grind of homeschooling and a great way to keep our focus on Christ this time of year!
Your kids look excited about their projects and activities! :)
God bless you and yours!
I love the quote, too!
You are doing a great job, it seems, with making Advent a special, meaningful experience for your family. I just looked to see if our library has the Strega Nona book you mentioned, and it does! Thanks for all of your ideas and suggestions!
Yes! Enjoy Advent! I love Voddie Baucham. I was fortunate to hear him speak at our homeschool conference in May. He is such a powerful speaker. I nominated you for a Liebster Blog Award - see my post tonight!! Blessings!
I love the idea of reading a different Christmas story every day! What a great way to always keep the spirit of the season in your mind!
I also love the manger at the top of the Advent chain.
We set up our Nativity, but we won't put Baby Jesus in until Christmas Day. It's always a big deal when we put him in.
I will try to call you soon!
Thanks for stopping by Stephanie's Mommy Brain. Looks like you're off to a good start with Advent activities. I'm trying to put action to my intention this Christmas. So far so good. :)
Found you via the Sonlight Catholic group (just joined last week) and wonder how I missed finding your blog before now.
I'm curious about your Advent wreath's candles. Where did you get them? With a toddler in the house I get nervous about lighting real candles.
