Try a New Recipe Tuesday- October 9

It's that time again!  :-)  I really look forward each week to the recipes that are shared and enjoy trying them with my family.

This week, for the first time, I am not sharing a food recipe, but a homemaking recipe.  I make my own powder laundry detergent.  Not only is it all-natural, but the cost is SO far less than what it costs to buy commercial detergent and it cleans really well!

I use a scent-free soap as a base because of allergies/asthma in my family, but others have made it very successfully with fels-naptha soap and enjoy the pleasant scent.  I have been using Ivory pure and simple, but  am going to try Dr. Bronner's organic unscented soap next.  I have four active children and a husband that works outside and it has worked really, really well in making our clothes clean.  :-)  Believe it or not, you have to use only one tablespoon for a regular load and two tablespoons for a heavily soiled load.  That's it.  It comes out to about 4 cents a load.  That is much less than the commercially sold brands.

one bar of soap (like I mentioned, I have used Ivory pure and simple, but many use Felt-naptha laundry soap, Dr. Bronner's, etc.)

1/2 cup Borax 20 Mule Team

1/2 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

1/4 cup free and clear Oxi-Clean (optional)

Finely grate bar of soap.  Add other ingredients.  Stir vigorously or put lid on container and shake.  Some people have put it in a food processor.  I have not had to do that.  Stirring/shaking has done the trick.  :-)

Thank you for sharing at my Our Favorite Things Link Party. I have been wanting to try homemade laundry detergent. I've just been a bit afraid to get started.

We've been making our own liquid version of detergent for awhile but I admit, the 5-gallon bucket takes up a lot of room! I may try this version since I already have all the ingredients in the house. Do you ever find the powder sticks in places inside the machine?

Thanks, all! @Carrie, I have not found that any stays in the washer. You also use just one tablespoon and if you put it in with the water in the beginning and let it dissolve/mix in before adding your clothes, I don't think you'll have any problems! :-)

I use a very similar laundry soap recipe and just love it. The clothes don't smell like perfume and it's so cheap and "clean" for the water supply. Thanks for sharing & hosting!

Thanks for stopping by and linking up at Lovin' The Weekend Blog Hops. Stopped by to say hi and saw your great party here. I decided to link up my Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen post from last week. We made Broccoli Tree Cornbread Muffins in honor of our Ll:Leaf unit.
I will try to remember to link up next week too. If you have a chance I invite you to stop by and link up at Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen. It is my weekly linky for times spent in the kitchen with your children or kid-friendly recipes.
Have a blessed day.

Hi Lisa,
I appologise for linking into your recipe section; but after hunting for a way to contact you, this seemed to be one way I could find.
I am wondering if you would like to review an Advent book called Destination: Bethlehem by Sharon Altman (me) and Christine Winkelman (my daughter).
I would be happy to send you a copy to review – and if you like it and would like to do a give-away contest, I could send you another copy.
Here is a link to my blog about the book. It is a good Catholic chapter book for each day of December leading up to Christmas – and is both entertaining and educational for the adults reading it aloud and the children listening.
This book has also been translated into Castillian Spanish and published by Ediciones Palabra in Madrid. I have a few copies available if you are interested.
See d-bethlehem.blogspot.com and let me know what you think!
Hope you have a blessed day,
Sharon Altman

Lisa, we just made a double batch of your powder laundry detergent. How much do you usually make and how long does it normally last? Thanks!
