TOS Review: FreedomProject Education

Today I am reviewing an online class offered by FreedomProject Education.

For those of you who have never heard of FPE, they are an accredited, classical academy offering interactive, online classes for K-12.  All of FPE's courses are fully accredited by the National Association of Private Schools.  Their philosophy is based on Judeo-Christian values and they are not aligned with Common Core.

They offer so many wonderful courses and I have known many people who have enjoyed their classes, so I was definitely excited when my 15 and 16 year old sons were offered the opportunity to take a class.  You can see all of the high school classes they offer here, 6th grade and junior high courses here and elementary classes here.  There are payment plans available for full-time students. The upcoming family courses can be found here.  (Check out the two upcoming classes.  The cost is free.  They simply ask for a $50 donation for the professor's time.)

Family courses are courses where families are encouraged to attend together.  What a wonderful idea! I loved that I was able to take the class along with them and have such meaningful discussions afterwards.  FPE suggests that students in the Family courses be at least 13 years old. There are no papers or tests in the Family Courses.  We were simply asked to read a chapter a week in the book to be prepared for the lecture and discussion that followed.

The course my boys took was called "Mother, Can I Trust the Government?"  That particular class is offered once a year.  The 8-week course was taught by Dr. Jake Jacobs, the author of the book of the same name that you can find here.

Dr. Jacobs is the president and founder of the Politically Incorrect Institute.  He has degrees in American History and Biblical and Judeo-Christian Studies from the Arizona State University, Ashland Theological Seminary and North-West University.  He has spent more than 27 years in the high school public and private school systems and at the college level teaching his passion for our Constitutional Republic.

The roots of the American Governmental System were introduced to the students in a personal and engaging way.  Dr. Jacobs interacted with each student, calling them by name and encouraging their participation.  Dr. Jacobs covered in depth the Founding Fathers and the context in which they wrote the Constitution.  Their philosophical backgrounds, opinions and own writings were examined and discussed to be able to understand in context their intent in writing the document.  There were classes that also covered the Civil War and more modern topics.

You can see Dr. Jacobs engaging with students in the window.  The slide he was discussing is on the right.  There is a chat box below for all of the students (I blanked it out since it had the kids' names on it)

What I liked as a busy parent was that each class was recorded and we were sent a link of the recording the following day.  When we did have to miss a class, it was there and we were still able to watch, learn and catch up with the class.

We learned so much from this class.  And, I found out that the title of the class and book was intended to be a reference to Pink Floyd.  My kids missed that point.  But, they certainly did not miss how much there was to gain from the class.  They have a greater appreciation of what was intended by our Founding Fathers when the Contitution was framed, what a Constitutional Republic really means and how we all have an obligation to know what our government is doing.

We look forward to taking the other Family Courses that are offered and perhaps delving into some other subjects.  You should, as well.  You would not be disappointed.

Grain-Free Banana Pancakes

I tried these the other day and they were SO good!  I got them out of my new book "Everyday Grain-Free Baking."  Lots of good recipes in there to try.  :-)

Banana Pancakes

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (or coconut oil) melted, plus additional butter or oil for greasing your griddle
1/2 cup mashed ripe banana (about 1 large ripe banana)
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon coconut flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
pinch of ground cinnamon
4 large eggs

Place all of the liquid ingredients except the eggs into a bowl.  Mis well.  Then place all of the dry ingredients on top.  Mix just until well combined. (batter will be thick)

Add the eggs and mix just until the eggs are incorporated into the batter (do not overmix or pancakes will not be tender)

Transfer the pancake batter to a bowl to make it easier to spoon out the batter.  Allow it to sit 5-10 minutes, while you preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.

When ready to cook, grease preheated skillet or griddle with butter (or coconut oil).

Cook pancakes for about 2 minutes until pancakes begin to dry out at edges and the bottoms are golden brown.  Then use a large spatula to carefully lift and flip the pancakes and cook another 1-2 minutes until done, but not overbrowned.

Enjoy!

TOS Review- Egglo Entertainment

Today I am reviewing the following products from Egglo Entertainment:

This was such a fun and meaningful review to do!

What is this all about?  It is an Easter-themed product to teach in a real and tangible way that Christ is the Light of the World.  The book (The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure) is an engaging read.  Even my teenagers were interested in finding out what was going on.  I don't want to give anything away, but I will tell you that the children in the book begin an amazing adventure in their attic on Holy Saturday that brings them to many places.  They are learning a real lesson about Easter Sunday and Jesus' sacrifice.  They are on a treasure hunt, one they will never forget.  Neither will their readers.  I heard my daughter quoting a lesson she learned from the book later in the day.  Of course, I was thrilled!

After reading the story, I let the kiddos go downstairs into the basement where I had hid the Glow in the Dark Egglo Eggs.  I had already charged the eggs in the sunlight before the kiddos woke up and stuffed them each with a Scripture scroll (in and of themselves, they are wonderful and appropriate Scripture quotes for the Lenten/Easter season, but they really correlate with the story in the book, as well) and a Bible verse sticker.  This was our very first Easter egg hunt of the season! (and a welcomed one with this unending winter we have been having)  The kiddos have asked if we can do this again on Holy Saturday evening.  What a great idea!

After the eggs were all gathered, they took them upstairs, opened them and shared some of the verses.

They included:

"Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day." based on 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

"Jesus said, 'Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life." based on John 8:12

"Jesus said 'I am with you always" based on Matthew 28:20.

When then discussed each verse, what it was speaking to our heart and how it related to Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice for us.

The book and egg hunt can be used in so many capacities.  The curriculum gives many different activity suggestions for youth groups and churches.  Since we were doing it in a home/homeschool setting, we used the materials in the way I described above: reading the book, having the egg hunt, and then discussing what we had learned from the story, the hunt and the verses and stickers in each egg.

I may even add some additional verses into the eggs when we do the hunt on Holy Saturday.  There are so many that refer to Christ as the Light of the World.

The recommended age for the products is 4-13, however it can easily be adapted for any age.

All of the items above can be purchased as as kit for $50 or purchased separately (prices vary).

My Week in Review/Weekly Wrap-up/THMJ- March 6

What a whirlwind.  I cannot believe another week is coming to an end!

The highlights of our week include:

bowling

a ceramics program where the kids got to actually start with a block of clay and use their imaginations to make wonderful spring and Easter-themed pieces:

I can't wait to see the pieces after they are fired!  I will be sure to take pics!

National Pancake Day at IHOP (for free pancakes and to support the Children's Miracle Network) (sorry if these images are a little fuzzy.  I forgot my camera and used my phone)

and a snowstorm!!!!  I know, it has been colder than Alaska here in PA and we have gotten countless ice storms and "little" nuisance amounts of snow, but we finally got a large amount of accumulating snow that the kids could actually play in.  Ok, now that they got their "big" snow, I am officially ready for spring!

(that is Kiddo #4 doing a cartwheel in the snow!  So much more snow over the course of the and evening.  I think we got about 8-10 inches altogether on top of what was still on the ground from the last time)

My post this week (wow, only 1!  It's been a busy week!)
